Purchase advice

Hi y’all,

I am currently looking a a high end morgan Dollar to purchase, and saw one on a Facebook group post that caught my attention. Of course, I am cautious as there is always potential for scams or fakes when buying from individuals online. The seller has sent photos of the morgan inside the NGC slab, I just have a feeling it looks off. Any advice?

Fake coin in a fake holder. If that isn’t obvious to you I would highly advise against spending any real money on Morgansuntil you have developed your eye.

Thanks for the advice. May I ask what caught your eye about the holder?

  • Well for one thing I don't think the sticker is even holographic. And the coin is just awful. Compare the lettering E PLURIBUS UNUM to a known genuine example. And more obviously, it doesn't resemble the coin in the registry photo AT ALL.

Honestly I wasn’t paying much attention to the holder. This one is pretty deceiving but usually the insert color is a bit off or the font size and spacing don’t quite match. However if the coin is counterfeit, the people at NGC didn’t miss it so the holder must be as well.

A real 91-CC in 66 is a $15K coin. I would only spend that kind of money if I were able to view the coin in hand or it came from a VERY reputable source.

  • Cool, thanks for the info, I have been building a set for a while, and have only purchased from dealers such as heritage and a few local coin shows, never tried Facebook before but I know to stay away from it now. Thanks

Completely setting aside the coin itself, the first thing that stuck out to me was the slab gap around the coin. It's wide in the NGC slab shot, narrow in the seller's photo. I like Trueviews, but wish PCGS would include a slab shot as well.

Agree with fake coin and holder.

It’s certainly possible that there are good coins available on FB but you are really going to have to know your stuff as I’m sure there are significantly more shady sellers.

Anyway, I’m happy to have helped and I hope you share some of your collection here! I love seeing Morgans.

If you are going to spend that amount of money ONLY BUY a CAC! And then only if you really like the coin. Remember. as Lee F. Hewitt always said, "There is no Santa Claus in numismatics."

Do yourself and your wallet a favor, don’t buy expensive coins from a random online stranger without buyer protection.

And yes, the coin is fake.

Everything about that, except perhaps the hand holding the counterfeit, is fake.

Once you said "I saw it on Facebook" I didn't even need to look at the photos. :D:D:D

Never buy anything off Facebook and be careful what you click on.
Facebook is full of scammers because they do nothing to regulate the site.

Another dead giveaway…in the NGC photos the eagles wing tips for the most part point directly at the inserts prongs. The Facebook one isn’t even close.
