Intentionally Down Grading (Not Down Sizing) Down Grading Your Collection......Am I Crazy?

OAKSTAROAKSTAR Posts: 7,724 ✭✭✭✭✭

I just got tired of looking at this mint state 83. It's always bothered me. It made the entire album look unbalanced. They're all F to VF, straight graded, full Liberty, problem free coins. I like consistent looking sets/albums when possible.

Anyone need an MS-64 1883 No Cents to match the rest of your album? πŸ˜‚ 🀣

    I like the 1885.

Well, intentional or not, I opted for mostly XF to AU coins for my 7070 but the last page... bicentennial and other commems... are MS. This was mostly due to cost though... and my reluctance to crack Mint State Bust coinage!

    Collecting: Dansco 7070; Middle Date Large Cents (VF-AU); Box of 20;

I’ve done the same, in my Barber quarter and half collections. I need a nice balanced look. I thought I was the only one. πŸ˜‚

I prefer VF examples, but several of my raw coins came back PCGS XF 40. Can’t have that! I sold them and downgraded immediately. All better now!

Always looking for original, better date VF20-VF35 Barber quarters and halves, and a quality beer.

Makes sense, smart collectors look for aesthetically pleasing well matched sets. Do you have the other key date, the 12-s in the collection?

Yes but not the best pictures.

Nice set and I agree well matched is a better look.
I will sometimes see U.S. Type Sets with nice, problem free early type and then suddenly a modern proof coin is seen.
A well matched set garners more attention and love than one that is mishmashesly put together.

I'd say it's not easy putting together a consistent looking 7070 type set. It might take considerable effort looking for these coins.

And therein lies one of the joys of collecting.
    It should never be easy.

I would keep the 83 and sell everything else.

I thought about it, I laughed about it, then I forgot about it. πŸ˜‰

Reminds me that dealers were selling Jefferson nickel sets in the 1960-1970's with a BU 1950-D nickel and all the rest were circulated. This was because BU 1950-D's were easy to obtain as most were put away in mint state. Just as the 1883 no cents "V" nickel. I always wanted a circulated 1950-D one for my Jefferson nickel folder. I never found a 1950-D nickel in circulation. All the 1950-D nickels that I have ever owned were BU. I have started to upgrade my Jefferson's to BU.

I knew a guy many years ago that would always downgrade his album coins, if he could find a lower grade at a lower price, he would then get rid of the higher grade coin.

When I was a young collector, mixed grades in an album didn't mean much to me. Now I want them all to appear to be the same grade.

I wouldn't mind looking for a circulated 50-D but my entire Jefferson album is mint state. Here's a couple:

You have a wonderful set of Liberty nickels! I love the matching set.

Not crazy at all. I've done that a few times with my 7070, with the side benefit that it frees up some funds.

It’s your set and do it however you so desire.

I’m in the process of doing that with peace dollars. The high grade examples I have are just bland and ugly. I’m going for mid grade (MS64) that have better eye appeal.

The 85 was the franchise. I tried to build the set around it.

Not crazy at all. You have a plan, and you are executing the plan. I think your set looks nice.

I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.
