The mint marks are at different positions. Seems like one might be fake. Any ideas?

Both are genuine, struck from different dies.
A quick check confirms both are genuine as there are many other examples of the various placements of the mintmark.

The mintmarks where hand-punched, so they could be in different positions depending on the die.

Thanks for all the information!

I'm into seated half dimes, and don't know much about other series. So, I ask: Is there a good guide to the die pairs and die states for Lincoln cents? (I'd be a little surprised if there isn't, given the popularity of the series.) I'd go to that next to see if the coins in question can be attributed. Are any 11-S varieties rare & more valuable than others?...

I haven't noticed the variety with the low mintmark before, though I'm nothing close to a Lincoln cent specialist. Is it scarcer than the other die pair (left coin) that I'm used to seeing?
The example on the right looks like a die break in the loop of the "9". Can you confirm?
I was given one from my local Coin Shop. I was helping to build a set for a customer when I came across a 1911-S altered from a 1944-S.
It still had the VDB under the shoulder. Other than that, it was a decent alteration on the 44.
One has to wonder why someone would spend time to alter the coin when the monetary gain is pretty small.
