Coin of the Year....and the Winner is....
I wasn't really paying attention to these awards...but recently the US Mint stamped one of their coins with the prestigious Coin of the Year and I wondered if I had any of these award winning coins.
Well I didn't have this one. And then I learned there were actually ten categories and this was the winner in "Best Gold"
What were the categories??
BEST GOLD
BEST SILVER
BEST CROWN
CIRCULATING
BI-METAL
ARTISTIC
INNOVATIVE
INSPIRING
HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT
COMMEMORATING A HISTORICAL EVENT
And then one is chosen as the Champion. The gold coin above is a 2021 issue winning for 2023...so there is a two year lag time involved. And the competition is open to the entire world. So who won the 2023 Champion Coin??? Turns out to be a beautiful Ukrainian Independence coin from the "Most Artistic" category.
Here's last year's champ
and looking back even further...
Well, that's cool, I've got that one!!!
Also winning the top spot celebrating 40 years of coin awards, "Most Innovative" with all kinds of curves and dimensional optics, from Austria 2023:
Oh, and this one from the US Mint last year: (Don't forget the two year lag time...this is a 2020 coin!)
Here's one I really like, Canada's "Best Crown"2023:
How are these chosen?? From Numismatic News: "The COTY nominee selection process began with 500 coins from 50 countries, with a judging panel of 100 experts from around the world voting to determine 10 deserving coins in 10 categories of competition. That same panel then narrows it down to 10 finalists: the winner of each category. A final vote determines one of those 10 coins to earn top honors, the Coin of the Year."
So for the Coin of the Year 2024, we need to look back at 2022. Do you remember anything from 2 yrs ago you really liked??
Here's a look at the 2022 show...I think they hold the awards in August...
