My first addition in probably more than a year.

It seems like I just don't add much to my collection lately, I've turned into more of a net seller than buyer. It isn't for lack of trying but I always seem to be outbid. Quite often it's by 1-2 eBay sellers and the auction item is soon thereafter listed at that site. Very frustrating. It's meant that I'll wait for an auction to start and follow along for the few lots that interest me only to stop as the bidding gets too high. Recently I decided to adopt a different style: I plop down my high bid, forget about the sale and check after it's done.

Such was the case with the lot below at Stack's.

The medal itself is a nice glossy brown example which is most typically found in White Metal, scarcely in Bronze and rarely in Silver. The obverse shows Columbus surrounded by his three ships floating in waves and water, escorted around by whales. The reverse shows Spanish and United States shields with central script relating to the dedication itself. It was designed by Charles Frederick Naegele and struck at Gorham Manufacturing Co. The NGC census lists 11 as having been graded with (5) at MS64 and a lone medal grading MS65. PCGS doesn't yet list any. Enjoy and please post images of any similar medals you might own.

Maywood.

I don't know much about the medallic arts but I agree with you on your take about auctions. These days I set it and forget it, unless it's something I really, really want.

Impressive medal. I like it. Do you know anything about the "Committee of one hundred citizens"?

Now, re selling: As I recall, you have a couple of proof nickels that I know of a good home if you are selling ... :)

@Mark said: Do you know anything about the "Committee of one hundred citizens"?

All I know is what little I have found searching online, and none of it is definitive.
--- in 1892 the City Club was started.
--- there is a listing of a Citizens Committee of 100 in New York but it dates to 1901.

Nathan Eglit lists nothing in his catalogue and I have never seen an explanation given with an auction listing. I always assumed it was just a delegation from New York regarding the Chicago Exhibition.

That is pretty neat. I could see myself jumping ship and falling headfirst into medal collecting...
