Quarter/Dollar mules

Hello again, after a long hiatus…

About 20 years ago there were some quarter/dollar mules produced at the mint. If memory serves me right, the Secret Service was rounding up the ones that made it out into collectors hands.

Was there ever any definitive count of how many of these were produced? Were all of them accounted for, or are there still some in private hands somewhere?

"Have a nice day!"

If I remember correctly, there was one collector that was buying all of them he could. somewhere around 50 K each. Unknown totals but there were at least a couple dozen. I never heard about the secret service.

My vague recollection was that ones that were legitimately found in commerce were allowed but that the Secret Service suspected someone of creating these intentionally and those that could be traced to that source were being pursued. The reasoning was that those that left the mint through normal channels were considered legitimate.

My memory could be a little off, and I'm not sure if they gave up at some point as I never heard about any actual confiscations.
