Hat Breaks

I wish to know whether hat breaks such as this are worth anything.

I have found probably a roll and a half of these, and most of them have a small lump, such as the one pictured. Some however, have a much larger lump, and some have one nearer to the bill of the hat.

Also, I would like to know if anyone has found any that are 2021-D. All of the ones I have found are P-Mints.

Die chip, minimal value to some collectors of such minor things, worth a quarter to someone like myself.

I agree that it would take a special collector to make this coin bring a premium.

If I had all those coins, I would put them in order from smallest to largest to track the die state progression (just for fun). Then I would spend the duplicates, and compare the future ones found to the progression to see if I can find a new die state. It would give you something fun to hunt for and you would be able to learn about die states along the way.

I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.

That is a good idea. I will try it. The fact that there are definitely multiple does makes it harder though.

IF the hat is really full from a larger die chip it may bring a better premium. It does seem to be a popular spot on the reverse dies that are prone to chipping.

I got out my coins, and they totaled 46. There are six distinct places that the break occurs.
    Type 1

    Type 2

    Type 3

    Type 4

    Type 5

    Type 6

I found that 38 are type 1, including the one that has the whole hat covered, 2 are type 2, 1 is type 3(kind of indistinct), 3 are type 4, 1 is type 5, and 1 is type 6.

Minor die chips have real value, they are just too common.
The amount that you have found yourself tells you that.

Yeah, I thought that. I just thought that since I had a lot, they might increase in value with bulk. This also has been a very interesting thread. If anyone has any thing to add, please do so. Also, if you have found any that you would like to post, especially any 2021-Ds, that would be much appreciated.
