Is this really struck thru cloth?

My first instinct was more towards post mint damage rather than cloth, but I’m probably missing something

Are there any legitimate known struck thru cloth on both the obv and rev? I'm not an error guy but I'm thinking like you that PMD is the most likely cause.

Send it to PCI for their authenticity guarantee. :D

Is that a PCI slab or a no name one that looks like a PCI holder?

I know PCGS hires the best in the field when it comes to error coinage. Does NGC, or are they regular graders tasked with grading/authenticating errors too?
I wonder if back in the day (as this PCI coin was graded) if PCI also deferred to any expert(s) or if they just winged it?

I'm sure that you probably already know this, but first you have to understand that PCI has gone through multiple owners, some more reputable than others.

Second, I can't speak specifically to errors, but at one time PCI did have their signature series where they used experts like JT Stanton and others for varieties, etc. However, I have also heard that PCI eventually just started using signature facsimiles without actually sending coins to the experts for verification so quien sabe...

At the time the "struck though cloth" dime was graded with PCI they were going through their reputable stage.

NGC's graders attribute the errors themselves, but NGC also makes sure a finalizer sees every coin. At PCGS, if two graders agree on the grade, it's good to go... PCGS doesn't have traditional finalizers any more, that look at every coin. I'm not sure how the error coins are treated these days, since they introduced the cheaper tier for errors. I assume the higher-priced tier all go to their chosen consultant for review.

    Good info DelawareDoons. Thank you.
As I see a larger percentage of error coins now in ANACS holders I am guessing ANACS does have a dedicated error specialist.
