Folks,
I'm not sure what to make of this Buffalo nickel. It's smaller than a regular nickel and it's the size of a penny. Could someone have altered it mechanically after it was minted?
Thanks

PMD is what I see. What does the edge look like?

Looks like some one turned it down (they took it off the edges)
if the edges do not look tooled, weigh it ... could be a planchet for something else
Since it appears to be a full strike all the way to the edge it would make me think it left the US Mint as a regular sized coin that was subsequently shaved down for whatever reason.

Is it the same thickness as a regular nickel?
It has the diameter and thickness of a penny.
Thanks everyone for the feedback. I don't have a scale to weigh the coin. The edges are smooth and have a worn look like the rest of the coin. It must have seen plenty of circulation over the years.
If it is considerably thinner than a normal nickel, then it may have been subjected to nitric acid, which will eat away all sides evenly.
Or, as others have indicated, it might have been put on a lathe to mill down the perimeter.
It has to be one of the two (post-mint damage).
I've heard of, obviously, cents shaved down to a dime yet not a nickel shaved down to a cent.
It's interesting, to say the least.
