I have been seeking an 1875-S seated QUARTER for about 7 years now. Hooray! Great Collections lists an 1875-S quarter today. BOO! For the seventh or eight time in just the last two years the coin is actually a Twenty cent piece! Gosh. How come they quit making them ? James

Nice one on ebay. But yeah, listings are littered with 20c pieces.
Here's my VF20. Not the greatest coin. The 75 Philly has been unusually hard to find a nice mid grade also.
I once came across the opposite situation. A collector thought he had an 1876-CC 20 Cent piece and really had the quarter.

A common mistake that people have been making for 148 years now.
Now we know why they discontinued them for circulation after 2 years.
True story - My dad owned a coffee shop. One day around 1960 he brought home for me an 1875-S Twenty Cent piece that apparently a customer thought was a quarter and used that to pay for a cup of coffee (I think the customer was given some change back).
That Twenty Cent piece fascinated me, and that’s the coin that sparked my interest in coin collecting! My biggest regret in this wonderful hobby is that many years ago I chose to sell that coin when I bought an upgrade for my Type Set. Oh how I regret not saving that sentimental coin!![:'( :'(](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/cry.png)

My collecting “Pride & Joy” is my PCGS Registry Dansco 7070 Set:

I know the feeling. I can't tell you how many times at coin shows I thought I'd found the perfect 1875-S quarter for my collection only to discover it was the much more common twenty cent piece. Here's my example that I really overpaid for.

wow, you must have a fabulous Seated quarter collection. first that 73-S in another thread and now this jewel. Wish I had your luck.
My 1875-S quarter is just a nice VF35 placeholder. When I see a MS piece offered, it usually has ugly die striations as if someone filed down the planchet before it was struck. The other options are 1) dipped, 2) overgraded, and 3) ugly toning. It sure is hard to obtain a nice one given that it's fairly frequently offered in MS grades.
Edited to add: note the difference in mintmark style and placement between my coin and the previous one shown.
