1983 S Proof Lincoln

Can anyone explain the odd toning or matte finish on this coin? Thanks.

2X2 staple holders are not airtight at all, and the holes from the previously-removed smaller staples are helping expose the coin to even more air. What you are seeing are the effects of air getting to the coin, and the possible start of PVC contamination from the plastic page the coins are in.

Toning on any copper coin is not unusual.
Depending on the environment they have been exposed to,
they can tone many different colours.
