What's Up With These 'New' Johnson Matthey Gold Bars??

LuxorLuxor Posts: 475 ✭✭✭✭✭

I recently saw offered by a bullion dealer these JM 1 oz gold bars in assay cards and they looked nothing like the vintage JM bars we all know so I called and inquired about them, and was told these are in fact newly produced bars and the producer paid a license fee to use the Johnson Matthey name and logo. Really?? What's up here....is that true??

    When in doubt dont

  • I know Asahi purchased the company about 8 years ago. I did hear someone say they are making silver bars again under the JM logo but idk how real that info is.

I have never seen that holder before and why is the serial number
on the holder instead of the bar?

Note that the new version has lower-case letters "ohnson atthey" (and possibly no serial numbers).
The older version is all upper-case.

I remember reading that Sunshine mint were producing Johnson Matthey branded bars around 2013ish before the sell to Asahi. Those were Silver bars though…

I agree that one should exercise extreme caution when buying gold, and I’m not suggesting that you buy these. But they are available at SD Bullion. Doesn’t that suggest they are legit? (at least the ones being sold by SD Bullion)?

    No thanks. I'll pass.

Looking at that pick, it lacks crisp and sharp definition.

And the lower case letters just dont encourage me either.
