CARDS IN THE FUTURE...

It surprises me when someone gets a $50 game-used card off eBay for like $10 and thinks he got a great deal! Shouldn't that tell one the state of cards??

My Predictions:

Game-Used cards are getting more and more common. Even people who do not have good cards, most likely have some jersey cards. They are becomming more and more easily obtainable. THERE IS NO WAY THESE CARDS WILL HOLD THEIR VALUE!! NONE.
The floor cards and ball cards etc... have gone way too far, these cards are terrible and will not hold their value.

One example if Fleer puts a Vince Carter Game Jersey card in about every frikkin' box. It has gone too far when yo can buy a jersey card of one of the hottest players for under $20 on eBay.

In my opinion these cards will hold their value:

Autographs or Autographed Jersey cards of the stars and legends (Bird, Jordan, Kobe, Marino, Bradshaw, Elway, Jeter, Arod, the list goes on and on...)

and the cards that will be most valuable in the future:

HIGH-END ROOKIES: I think that rookie cards form Playoff Contenders, Spx, and Sp Authentic will hold their value the best. There is only one chance to make a rookie card, unlike jersey cards. Sets such as 2001 PLayoff Contenders with no Game-Used ad autographed rookies are selling the best now, and will in the future. GUARANTEED!!

I do not understand why everyone is so hapy about buying jersey cards, they must want to lose money.

Anyone agree with me or am I crazy?

  • Do you think that even like the 00-01 game used cards will go down even though there can be no more produced or the future GU cards will go down?

  • awhile back becket had an article on the whole ordeal about how when gu cards first came out, only the top collctors had them and now with sets like private stock where there is one jersey per pack it has really hurt their value. i personally try to stick to #ed cards because I think those won't lose their value. common jerseys definitely will but stars will probably stay high.

  • I believe all jersey cards that are not numbered to a low amount or are not patches will go down. There are too many around today.
That article in Beckett hit the nail on the head. It is good for the casual collector to have jersey cards, but not someone who puts money into cards and wants to actually save them...

Look at the old Upper Deck sets... Upper Deck sets from 97 and 98 were one of the firsts sets to have jersey cards. When they came out, the cards sold in the thousands for the stars. Today you can get those same cards on eBay for about a hundred bucks.

I think that this is obvious, however as long as the GU's are collectable who cares?? I think that most
people collect GU'ed because they like the look and they collect their facorite players. These people are not
    looking to make money.

As for you and I, we want to make money, so we collect the rookies like contenders. I prefer autographs and
will give up a cool jersey or high dollar card to get an autograph. I think the companies have found for the moment
a cheap way to make products, after all a size XXXL jersey can last for years if cut into tiny squares, how many
autographs of Mike Vick or Barry Bonds can the price of one jersey buy you??

I would also guess that sooner or later a premium will be put on autographs that are on the actual card vs the
sticker cra* that playoff started and now everyone is doing. I like the idea of the actual player touching the card.
Those massed produced stickers are dumb.

PS Trading any of your contenders?? Did you see the Travis Henry close at 93 bucks??

I don't think stuff like Playoff contenders and stuff like that will be around in 20-30 years. I collect Topps RC's, Bowman RC's, UD RC's, and some Topps and Bowman Chrome RC's. I don't think collectors will remember Topps chrome black bordered gold lettered #'ed to 50 rookies or similar stuff. Maybe its me, but I'll stick to the plain stuff

Yanksfan> Those 93 Finest refractors are still sought after almost 10 years, I think certain things will always
be remembered and wanted (500 HR club stuff...)

  • Since 1996, I have watched the hobby really go crazy. In my honest opinion, 1996 was the best year the hobby has seen in years, and maybe for some time to come. Some of the best inserts came out of that year.

I remember the buz around Select Certified "probably the nicest all around brand hands down". The Mirror Reds, Blues, Golds, not to mention the artist proofs, gold teams, etc. Then there was Pacific Cramers Choice, an unbelievably hard insert to pull even though the pack prices were dirt cheap. Playoff had the Playoff Honors insert, and the Leather Accent, and Spectralution Dominions (estimated 35 of each). Another outstanding product was Laserview Insciptions. Although most of the sigs on the cards have faded by now, it was new, and I personally liked it. Then we got to the route of todays problem...........1996 UD Game-Used Jerseys.

The first time I saw one was when my wife pulled a Rice at a card show in Germany. The place went nuts, and I still haven't heard the end of it. But, what started and a brilliant idea quickly got stomped

If you dig out one of your older Becketts, you will see all prices in 1996 were VERY high, and if you look now, it's shameful. The only inserts that weathered the storm, was the original Game-Used card.

It's all demand, and there is really no demand for those cards of 1996 anymore. The hobby is flooded, and there is no chase anymore.

I personally collect RCs, and the only GU I keep are either ones I "like", or are very original. What I have learned is, it doesn't matter what it is, it eventually is going down in the price collumn. My advice is, keep the hobby fun, and remember, cards originally were for children and bicycle spokes, LOL
