A lot of interesting designs. However, I don't understand why the Peace/Morgan Dollars and Kennedy half dollars were included, as they are currently yearly US Mint releases.

It would be great to see the Saint-Gaudens High Relief $20 Gold Coin or the $20 Gold Double Eagle make a comeback.

Interesting list as the 1848 CAL Liberty $2.5, 1907 ASG HR double eagle, 1986 Statue of Liberty, 1987 Constitution and 1999 George Washington $5 gold and 2017 American Liberty $100 were all coins originally issued in gold and all can be found by collectors, though of course the 1907 ASG is far more money than the modern $5 commems and the 1848 CAL is far more money and far more difficult to find. The 1849 Liberty double eagle appears to be unique as an original so that is in some ways entirely different.

Of the others, the 1916 Merc, 1916 SLQ, 1916 WLH and 1964 JFK, as well as the previously mentioned 2017 American Liberty $100, have already been re-issued in gold in the last decade.

So, the US Mint boasts 230+ years of fabulous coinage, but of the 21-designs proposed they offer five (5) issued in the last decade, five (5) more that can be found (though only three relatively easily affordable) by most collectors and one that is unique. I guess no one at the US Mint or in the survey department thought eleven (11) designs already made in gold out of 21 might be bit heavy with re-issues?

If they wanted to re-issue coinage in gold they could have used some of the classic commems, too.

    I apologize about that @CaptHenway...
This website and its software sometimes does weird things, including changing a name that one did not put in,
The comment was originally attributable to: hfjacinto How this website switched it to you is beyond me....

Unfortunately, this website software can't keep up with editing and changes one does if someone is replying to the original comment.

It ultimately comes down to me...as I should have proofread my comment several times before hitting Post.

Some of those I don’t see how they could belong in a best of list of mint items. I would have liked to have seen capped gold eagles or turban ones. Heck, bust halves should have been in the list. Why not the double dime?

Here is the reasoning behind the selections according to the survey website:

The list of 21 historic coins was developed in consultation with the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) and the Curator of the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institute after considering artistic merit, historical significance, and other factors. The coins span the Mint’s history, from its inception in 1792 to our award winning 2017 American Liberty 24k gold coin.

Feedback from this survey will be presented to the CCAC and the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts (CFA). With recommendations from those committees, the Secretary of the Treasury will select the final designs for this program.

Hope that helps in understanding the reasoning??

Was really hoping to see an Indian cent as a choice for this...

Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

No buffalo nickel, no Indian head cent? Yet some lame modern commemoratives?

The Gobrecht is what I hope for among those. The problem is the 0.999 silver or gold to be used. Just won’t look right. I know the reasons why but I would love to have 0.90 and a frosty luster.

  • Why no Buffalo Nickel or Indian Head Cents? Too offensive? SMH.

none of them. none have anything to do with "Independence"

It was hard, looking over this list, to not wonder in the back of my head if there was any political correctness involved in these choices. It's unfortunate that one even has to have these thoughts.

Such is the world these days.

When one thinks of the Indians or the Buffalo, I would venture to say that neither group would want to have anything to do with the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States or its exploration of the continent as it continued to grow.

I picked some of the early copper and a couple of the gold coins. The .999 standard kind of kills the silver for me.

  • GiveMeProofGiveMeProof Posts: 629 ✭✭✭✭

Voted 10 on all the silver and copper. Gold is not my thing.

There were some I really liked. I would purchase most of the coins if they come out, but they need to do better than an uncirculated finish like they did on the Peace and Morgan’s.

I can understand why not reissuing IHC and Bison nickels as you can get a mint state one for low cost. I don’t know why they would reissue the the walking liberty 50 cents as those are affordable also in mint state.

My favorites would be the half disme, flying eagle and the early cents.

If they release the standing liberty I hope it the 1916 version and anatomically correct.

At least one of the 1916 issues deserves to be there.
