Hmmm… what to do… anacs 1879 S AU58PL

Should I leave as is or send in the holder to cross at the same grade? I think PCGS only has 1 58PL for the series and it’s a 1891CC 58PL.

I think there was a previous discussion as to whether a 58PL was a mechanical error. And if there’s only one for the series, that (edited) would appear to be the case.

    There’s 1 58DMPL too.

I would leave it as is -- doesn't seem to be much from our hosts with 58PL's these days.

Leave it in its current slab.

PCGS will not add the suffix for 58pl or dmpl morgans. NGC will. Keep as-is, soap-box holders are well-graded,generally, and look good as well.

Sorry, I meant to indicate that a mechanical error “would” (not “wouldn’t) appear to be the case. The single 58DMPL doesn’t change my thinking.

I would keep all of the AUPL, AUDMPL, and UDM in those old holders. I sure wish I had.

I really like and collect these soap bar slabs. If I was being selfish, I'd say break it out........reduces the population and makes mine more valuable. >:);)

If I was being honest, I'd say keep it as is.

Leave as is or specify minimum grade on submission form.

Leave it as is. Some collectors like the old ANACS holders these days.

Maybe the coin is better than I am seeing in the photos, but I do not see that getting a PL in todays grading room. Maybe different pics would change my mind.

    Leave as is

I thought our hosts started giving the PL designation to AU coins that merited it. Maybe not. Nevertheless, I'd leave it. 79-S is a common coin in PL and is fairly cheap in 63PL.

Save your money, keep it the way it is

Cross with the designation only - you wouldn’t want to rule out a 55PL, which may be a unique slab. Worst case scenario you spend some money on grading and shipping. However I didn’t think pcgs designates pl or Dmpl on circ Morgans, but I could be mistaken.

Good luck, keep us posted on what you decide to do

Side note-I'm all for collecting what you like but don't get why people are hung up on and/or pay big premiums for "unique slabs". All that means is that no one else has yet submitted one of the many similar quality coins that are undoubtedly out there, particularly with Morgans- so unique inevitably doesn't stay unique, with the possible exception of perhaps the 69 stuff. And as grading keeps getting looser-who knows even then...just saying.

More downside risk then upside potential crossing.
