PCGS rare coin

Random general question—If you submit a coin for grading and variety attribution with PCGS and they discover that the coin is rare and worth a high premium-do they notify you before sending it back to you? I was reading about it on their website and I’m still confused.

If you have a rare die marriage or variety that isn't obvious and you don't declare it on the submission page then the TPGs (PCGS, NGC, CACG, ANACS) won't necessarily label it or recognize it for you.
In honor of the memory of Cpl. Michael E. Thompson
It's up to you to identify the variety before you submit, just as it is up to you to research the rarity and/or value of the coin. Based on the coins you've shown in other threads, the value of your coins is less than the cost of submission, let alone variety attribution. If you choose to submit anyway, your payments are what we would call "tuition".
In addition to the comments above re variety attribution, if you submit a coin (for example) under Economy which has a $300 max value and they determine that the coin is >$10,000, they will automatically charge you the Walkthrough grading fee.

Thanks! Just fyi-None of the coins I’ve posted in other threads are any of the ones I’ve submitted. trust me -after the comments I received on my other coins -I OBVIOUSLY did not send any of those in for grading 😭😭my question was just a general question.
Don't take the comments personally and please keep asking any questions you want to ask. 😉😎
There are several proven truism's in the coin hobby.
It is easier to buy the coin in the grade you are seeking... than follow the often frustrating practice of grading.
You should know more than the dealer (and cherry pick him)
You should know more than the grader when it comes to variety attribution. Confirming what you already know.
It can take years to learn to grade just a single series.
Buy PCGS
Buy PCGS with a CAC sticker
Buy NGC
Buy NGC with a CAC sticker
Buy the new CAC grading service
Build a nice set of graded coins... visit coin shows.
You need to see hundreds of coins on a regular basis to be remotely competent in grading, or you will lose the skill.
Then you will be in a position to experience another truism... "buy the coin, not the holder"
Just starting out?
Buying mint products, searching for existing mint products at shows, and submitting the fruit of the search would be the only area I can advise.
You can cheaply purchase and submit coins looking for condition rarity with confidence they have not been cleaned or circulated.
We all paid the same tuition at some point, so please take all of our advice to heart.

Ask guestions, it's why we're here. Best wishes 👍
Sometimes they won’t recognize the rare ones. I submitted a 1921 VAM 1G and they didn’t recognize that one. I should have asked for a 1F because it’s the same obverse and apparently many of the 1Fs out there are actually the rarer 1G.
To answer the question of value, if you send a coin to PCGS in a tier lower than the value of the coin as graded they will upcharge the submission fee for that coin. I've only had this happen once, on a Franklin that went DCAM instead of CAM.

Very true. 👍

Cherry pics can be found already in holders.
I bought this coin simply because I liked the coin, and while showing it here on the boards, one of the members mentioned that it was a good variety, turned out it was indeed!
This was a cherry pick I didn’t even look for!
Instead of sending back for the variety, attribution, which a lot of people recommended, I didn’t really want to do that. It was already in a good holder with a nice Trueview. I just had Rick snow attribute it for me.
Even better in my opinion!

Long term the learning curve flattens somewhat.
While the new collector waits, Cherry Pickers Volumes 1&2 ought to be some of the first books purchased by new collectors.
Hours on ebay seeking varieties is fun and can profitable.
Like Ash said above, cherry picks can be found even in graded coins.
Example... picked six Vam's of a particular date.
Three were graded yet unattributed.
Three were raw.
The raw coins were graded AU details and were flipped covering the initial cost of all six plus all PCGS fees.
Sold the PCGS unattributed Vam's for over $4K.
I have hit big on mint products as well.
Less competition, cheap fun,
A couple of top pops sold for $3K
Alot of fun can be had for every budget.

@asheland,, what does the S1 mean on the 1866? I am not that knowledgeable in some grading terms. Thank you for your time

Snow Variety named after a specialist who studies die marriages.
His Eagle Eye sticker was a precursor to CAC

Snow-1 double die obverse.
It’s one of the better varieties. I had no clue when I bought it. It was a pleasant surprise.
