Blay coins hitting the market.

Clackamas1Clackamas1 Posts: 1,069 ✭✭✭✭✭

I just noticed some Blay coins up for sale. I was wondering why the entire collection was not sold. What are your thoughts. I have my eye on a few on them.

The bulk was sold earlier in the year. I think these are the leftovers and 2nd-3rd examples in his collection.

In addition to his #1 Ranked Indian Head Cent set, also up for auction on GC is his #1 Ranked Flying Eagle sets. Right now his 1856 Flying Eagle MS66 w/CAC has 39 bids (not me, lol) at $63,500, with almost 16 days still to go!!!

    Steve

P.S. @Clackamas1, please don’t bid against me on the four “lower priced” Indians I’m watching, lol. Maybe you can wait for Ian to rectify your problem of being unable to bid until after these lots have closed?😆

I used to joke that the only way to get those coins would be to outlive him, now here we are.

I have my eye on 2-3 in particular, and I'm sure there are some strong bidders also looking at them!

His 1877 IHC "Indian Princess" was bought raw out of a Stacks sale and is the only 1877 I've coveted out of all the 1877's I've seen over the years, now PC66+. Since selling my collection, it's no longer a mandatory buy.

"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose.

I remember Stewart enlisting TonyT to buy that 1877 cent. I also remember hearing TonyT's first statement to Stewart after his hiatus. Fun times.

Stewart owned an Indian I tried to buy several times over the years. A top pop RB that he wanted to go full red. I wonder if there are Indian dupes that might appear in the future? The man also owned some great Barber dimes.

    @tradedollarnut Well played. If you hear directly back from him please let me know. It would give us hope. :-}

No - there are no additional coins. All are in the two weeks of auctions coming up at GreatCollections in November.

Very sad but true. I’m glad he was able to showcase his coins with PCGS while he was still with us.

Nic - I see 112 of Stewart's Barber Dimes are ALSO included in the GC Auctions!

I could be wrong but thought many of his Canada sold last February.

His core collection of Canada sold in February, however, he had duplicates, and those are being sold in our November 12th/19th auctions.

It's bittersweet to see these coins come to market. I wish he was still with us on on these forums.

I'm looking forward to the sale. A nice touch would be to have a slab Blay insert.

I loved talking to him on PM's about Lincoln's. He actually bought a few from me. I needed the money at the time but I needed the cash. In retrospect I am glad I sold them since I used the money to start a business that can now afford to buy them back; talk about circular logic.

Stacks use to, at least when I was paying attention put out some great raw coins. I picked up a few top pops raw from them over the years. The grades were spot on in the auction catalogs.

Very nice coins. I will have to take a closer look over the next few days. Flying Eagles and IHC have always caught my eye.

So many of these coins are in old holders, which is why we did not reholder/pedigree the coins. Although, similar with the Lincoln Cents earlier in the year, if any winning bidder wishes for the Blay pedigree to be put on the holder/label, we can arrange this for a minimal PCGS cost. Just contact us after the auction.

    • Ian

Ian, that’s great. Can YOU also arrange, at our cost, that once you get the new holder back from PCGS with the Blay pedigree on the label, to have CAC automatically reapply their sticker?

I think just printing out the auction listing would be sufficient. Even Stewart did not do it and I certainly would not do it especially on some of the first gen holders. Everyone will be able to track the coin for 100 years.

Glad that GC is the auction house for these coins. So disappointed with all the other auction houses out there. Ian obviously does a banger job, my son uses that word, I know its positive. I do miss Teletrade.
