Here's my spectacular new 1854s 50c..
I was stoked when @Barberian alerted me to this one, even more when my nuke bid wasn't entirely utilized 💥
.
It looks to have had a small bit of tooling, but you gotta expect that sort of thing now and then when buying raw coins on ebay.

The style of lapels on the coat should allow its creation to be dated.

    All glory is fleeting.

I don't see the tooling...might you point it out? >:)

    I totally agree.
All I can see is that possibly there was an "S" mintmark tooled on the reverse.

Pretty sure the mint mark is correct for the 1854 seated hipster half. I was referring to the tooling in the shield, but even there we could actually be seeing a previously unknown reengraved die..

Well, now that you've pointed that out, it is all I can see.

I would guess it was engraved 1860s-1870s, cool piece. :)

Type collector, mainly into Seated. -formerly Ownerofawheatiehorde. Good BST transactions with: mirabela, OKCC, MICHAELDIXON, Gerard

I'm glad that you got it, and happy to have helped. It's one of the benefits of posting here. Your collection of engraved coins was in the back of my mind when I saw this coin. it's pretty nice craftsmanship as well, IMO. I wonder if that reverse shield is a counterstamp.

    Thanks again @Barberian !
Looks a bit like a counter stamp in my pic, but no. Just warming up the old engraver I suppose.
I hope this is a contemporary piece and not a more recent one… hopefully I’ll have a chance to show and discuss my collection someday with some of my fellow carved collectors, preferably with one or two of the experts in the field 🙃

Side note, the not so G rated piece also made it into my collection somehow… it popped up on my phone right before closing with no bids, hit the bid button cuz it was going cheap, and now it’s mine…😂

    That's a cool conversation piece.

@jayPem I don't know which is worse - buying that "not so G-rated piece" or having to sell it.

There's a guy in a trenchcoat down the street who'll probably buy it if I get desperate..

You guys really crack me up......

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

    Well, that's cool as hell.
