What would you do with this?

A friend of mine was given this ex jewelry 1862 $3 gold coin. He said his uncle ( unsuccessfully IMO☹️) removed the mounting. What would be the best way to sell something like this? TIA

Yeah, I think this one would only have melt value at this point. (I’m no expert on this series so not accounting for if this is a rare date or variety).

Edited to add: seems like this is a better coin after all based on advice below. So, disregard my advice!

Assuming it's real, it's probably worth $1500-2500 once it's repaired properly. If you can't find anyone through here I would go to a local coin shop and see if they can recommend someone to help do a decent repair (after authenticating the coin is genuine for certain if you are not able to ascertain that yourself)

You can still remove more of the solder. It could be cleaned up a bit. It is probably worth getting it conserved and slab. It is a better coin.

No no, no worries. I'll offer the OP melt + $100 😅

Mintage of only 5782 - worth getting conserved. The coin may be undamaged under that solder as gold has a much higher melting point.

There are some acids that will eat that solder but not gold. This is forum I found helpful.
If you are skidish of working with Hydrochloric Acid you could take it to a jeweler and ask what they could do.

Contact Allen Stockton at crsstockton.com. He's a professional coin repair specialist who has a reputation for doing good work. That coin is rare and its value warrants getting it repaired and slabbed.

Absolutely get it conserved, that coin ranges from $3500 in VF30 to the moon, Find an expert to do the work, you'll be pleasantly surprised, of course if it's real.

IMO, the bezel should have been left on, or have been taken off by a professional.

yeah id get that solder off there first and foremost use iron and suction to remove solder as the man said gold has much higher melting point then conserve it.
