What's going on at PSA?

I submitted cards taken from wax packs back in the 80's, and they came back as altered. Knowing that the cards were not tampered with, and stored in screw down holders, there should have been at least some correspondence stating the cards were in question. The bad part is they did not grade or encapsulate the cards but charged full price for their "service". Has anybody seen this? Makes me not want to do business with them again.

Show pics of the cards you are talking about so we can see what they saw maybe.
Are you saying that they were stored in screw down holders for a long period of time? It is common for cards to be altered in screw down holders and PSA can detect this and consider them as altered.

Yeah the screw down holders are bad news.
Kiss me twice.....let's party.
For sure. I have a buddy who inherited a Clemente rookie from his dad who'd kept it in a screw-down. PSA wouldn't grade it either. Needless to say he was bummed. For financial and sentimental reasons.
What you experienced is normal and has happened to many of us. Depending on how tight you "screwed-down" the cards, you can probably get them graded by SGC or BGS, even CGC.... But PSA is pretty unforgiving for older cards in screwdowns... You can usually see a shine on the corners compared to the rest of the card.
yup, its the screw downs. they result in too much pressure being applied to the corners of the card and actually flatten cards out. the cards end up oversized and too thin, as they have been "squished"
And of course PSA charged you. They evaluated your cards and gave you their opinion. exactly what you paid them to do.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
I don't think the screw downs flattened the entire card and made it thinner, just the corners.
Seems to me to be a shame to reject a card for this.
Only the corners..... are thinner, but it's a PSA MO that this gets an altered rejection, been that way forever, and one aspect that they are consistent on..... The other grading companies, not so much (I used SGC for my screwdown rejects)
I had 4 rejected for being altered too, they spent 40+ years in a box. PSA is out of their minds
