Unbelievable update-Need help 1909svdb

A friend of mine picked up this 1909svdb and asked for my opinion. I believe it is real even thou it is really hard to see a dot in the “S” mint mark and the dots in the vdb appear to be very large.
Before I send it in I would appreciate comments on its authenticity and possible grade, which I know may be difficult with the pictures provided.

I say counterfeit.
1st thing I see is what looks like the sharp N:
The VDB doesn't look that great either:
And the mintmark:
Surface and color looks sketchy to me
From what I can see, I don’t think that’s it’s a genuine 1909-S VDB.

The dots or periods look like they cut into the raised portion of the rim.
Thank you everyone for the quick comments.
You just saved my friend some money.
Just doesn’t have the right look. Something overall feels wrong.
Looks to have had a rough life.

i'm going to be definiite here - absolutely a counterfeit
I didn't hedge, just presented the facts...
The only thing you have to remember, why it's not in a TPG holder!
Wouldn't even consider a coin like this raw

Was he able to return it? You stated your friend had "picked it up".........
"When they can't find anything wrong with you, they create it!"
Steven59: I told him never to buy a coin like this raw, but he didn’t listen to me. He did tell me the dealer would take it back. We will see.
A question for the group here, what if the buyer takes the coin back to the dealer and the dealer essentially says I didn’t sell that coin to you it’s counterfeit you switched it.
What would be the buyers next move?
I can’t believe what happened.
I told my friend this forum saved him money because his coin was not real. I explained all the great comments provided and the reasons why. Regardless, he wants me to send the coin in to PCGS. He wants verification from them it’s not real so he can show the dealer.
Upon digging he confesses he sees this guy (dealer) about twice a year at a flea market. The guy told him if he has any issues to let him know.
Against my better judgement I sent his coin in today, total cost about $103-. I am embarrassed because this coin will be associated with my name at PCGS, ugh.
I reminded him with his skill set never, ever buy a coin like this raw (I wouldn’t) which he agreed he screwed up. What makes it even worst is he told me what he paid (I cannot repeat out of embarrassment) and then said he should have known the price was too good.
The good news it’s not my coin.
1madman: it will be interesting how this plays out when he approaches the dealer.
Flea markets are good for some stuff but really!

if you look under30x magnication you cansee where the v and b in the vdb have been manipulated in some way
the v looks like it was stamped with tw9 1's forming v d is 1 and partial 2 to look like d and b is a 1 and a 3 to form b
You should have declined to send it in. Now it is starting to eat up money and time. How is he going to prove it is the same coin the flea market dealer sold him after all that time. Does he even have a receipt? More trouble ahead.
The images are poor but definitely bad imo. The V in VDB isn't even close.

"I am embarrassed because this coin will be associated with my name at PCGS, ugh."
Over the years, I have sent in several counterfeit and cleaned key date coins for customers because they wanted a "second" opinion. I do not think it will be associated with your name, especially since the graders do not know who sent the coin in.
A seasoned dealer told me this once:
"I've been very lucky with gambling on submitting questionable coins to PCGS—I've never won"

This coin isn’t even questionable. No 1909-S exists with that VDB reverse………maybe half of the 1909 Phillies do but no S’s.
This reverse has the dot between the D and B closer to the D whereas it should be centered in between. And the N in UNITED is the deep cut variety where it should be the shallow.
Someone will be greatly disappointed.
