1980 Topps Henderson Submission

I saw a post from Heritage that they are submitting an extremely large high-grade submission
of Rickey Henderson 1980 Topps #482. Literally, hundreds of copies, perhaps many 9's or 10's, from Vending cases.

Does anyone think this could change the pop report such that a PSA-10 at a lofty 100,000+
could plummet?? Nice PSA-9 copies are readily available at $2,000.
Current pop is PSA-9/10 2161/26 10's are obviously rare.

Always thought PSA-10 copies of 86 Fleer Jordan, 81 Topps Montana, 80 Topps Henderson, 86 Fleer Rice,
85-86 OPC Lemieux had possibility of huge price drops, due to unopened product out there.
What do people think?

I saw that post. Despite how nice the cards looked, I think you'll see a few 9s and maybe one 10 due to PSA actively trying to control the pop report these days. That being said, it shouldn't tank prices much.

One of my favorite baseball cards. In the early 90s, this card was the only card from the 80s and 90s that booked over 100 dollars in Beckett. Rickey Henderson would agree with me that Rickey Henderson is one of the greatest baseball players ever. Everybody's all geeked that Acuna Jr. stole 73 this year. Rickey Henderson isn't hearing that cause Rickey Henderson stole 130 in 1982. Most since 1887. 1406 career stolen bases. That's 468 more than 2nd place Lou Brock.

And he was caught stealing 42 times '82, and picked off 1st base 10 times.
With today's bigger bases and pickoff throw limits, Rickey would easily have had 150+.

Are they getting them all graded, or just the higher graded ones?
Prices on good looking PSA 5's might drop, but 8's, 9's &10's will probably be quickly absorbed into people's collections. Demand for these is huge.
Don't worry about unopened 1980 vending producing a bunch of 10's.
It's not going to happen. It wasn't going to happen before PSA tightened the grading, it's not going to happen now.

    Seems too good. Doesn't it?

I wonder if this card was double printed.

I think the pitch clock probably helps base runners steal too.

One PSA 10 is my prediction as well. No different from the 1993 SP Jeter Foil. You can still pull them from packs, but chances are, there are 2 or 3 issues that would prevent the card from being a 10.

Oh yeah. In my opinion a top 5 of all time (and I’m sure Rickey would disagree because he’s not higher). I have about 10 graded and mostly 9s that I got years ago. Love him and this card.

Also a top 5 card for me all time.

Curious of the results. They were splitting the sub between SGC and PSA.

A lot of the Henderson cards have a small dimple in the upper left of the card. I have submitted about 10, I got an 8 one time without the dimple and a 9 with the dimple, should have been just the opposite. The 8 was just as good as the 9 especially with no dimple.

Work hard and you will succeed!!

i would be surprised if there were a 10 graded. pop control is a thing. maybe there will be 1. I will be anxious to see the results.

I do agree with all of you. Noting that Heritage represents one of PSA's largest grading revenue streams.

How do they consistently get a dimple?

I don’t known if I would call it a dimple. Most if not all have this circle underneath the U in outfield in the position banner. Most if not all 10’s have it

  • Doesn't matter if they were fresh vending cases opened in 2023 or back in 1980 like the Reddit post. Getting a 10 is going to be difficult. Even if all 500 were gem from the factory, they went through teenagers hands back in the day to build sets. Nobody cared about corners and edges in 1980. Throw in another 43 years of storage and then transport back to Heritage in NY, good luck!
