You ever make your own medals/tokens/tribute “coins”?

Obviously this would be different from the greats like DC and his moonlight mint using authentic striking equipment… I was watching Forged In Fire (love that show) and it got me thinking. Blacksmithing is a lot more common than I ever thought before watching that show. It doesn’t seem like it’s too hard of a stretch to think that regular people might try casting their own tokens using similar techniques for their own amusement. Or even strike coin like designs using whatever metals they felt like since all metal types are readily available for a cost. Heck, overstrikes on regular coins repurposed as planchets would also work.

So have you ever cast or struck your own items (regardless of artistic merit)? If so, show some!

When I used to live in Charlotte about 20 years ago, I talked the guy at the Renaissance Festival into overstriking this foreign copper coin with his “Da Vinci” coin press where a large weight drops down on the dies to press the coin

The “Da Vinci” coin press looked like this

I took that overstrike to a coin club meeting and passed it around and they all thought it was a rare error until I told them how it was made. It’s a great conservation piece.

Now you’re making me think of getting some punches and having some fun. A little easier than buying a forge. :)

Not sure if this counts but in preparation for a trip to London several years ago I had some fun with some British coins I was bringing along to spend.

I don't quite recall the inspiration for the text, but I added "GOD SAVE THE QUEEN DEVIL TAKE THE REST" to several 50 pence coins.

Back when I was more active with my video game radio show, I had intended to order custom arcade tokens with the show's logo on one side. There is a company that will do such a thing.
