FSH - PCGS graded AU53 1848 Seated Dollar with rim clip

First, the back story - I wrote at some length about acquiring this coin here. To make that long story short, I had been watching it pop in and out of the market for nearly two decades before finally acquiring it.

Fast-forward to last week, when I was able to purchase another clipped Seated Dollar in an online auction. The new coin is a slightly more common date (1847), in slightly lower grade (XF Details), but the clip is just as nice and the price was right. My plan is to sell the 1848 and free up funds for other coins.

If you think I'm crazy and will be flooded with seller's remorse, know that I've done this before, notably with the 1909-S VDB in my clipped Lincoln cent. I picked up a raw VF and sold maybe the nicest example known in NGC 64RB, because I wanted to have an example guilt-free in my album. Similar thinking is at play here, I am simply not comfortable having a coin of this value in an album, so as long as I can keep the type set complete, off the nicer coin goes to a new home.

1848 Seated Dollar, choice AU details, cleaned, with a rim clip at 3:00

Photos of the coin as I received it a couple of years ago are below, these are a little over lit, the surfaces look a little more subdued with maybe a touch more gold tone at the rims. The frosty eagle on the reverse is typical for the date, only 15,000 of these were minted from a single set of dies and most examples I have researched look similar. The coin was almost certainly dipped at some point in the distant past. I am happy to provide more pictures if requested.

As for the error, this is one of around four clipped Seated Dollars known to me (two dated 1847 I have previously or currently own, and I recall one other (dated 1850?) years ago in Fred Weinberg's inventory). This is by far the nicest of the known specimens.

Asking price is $2,800 postpaid

I am going to give this a couple of weeks, then I will probably send it off to our hosts for grading, at which point it will be consigned to GC.

Re-upping this post as the coin is now straight-graded by PCGS as AU53, with the error noted on the holder. The new holder and the TrueView are below, as with many recently photographed coins the TV is a bit more yellow than the coin in hand.

I'll sell at the same $2800 delivered quoted above, and if nobody here wants it look for it on GC early in 2025.
