The "bad breath is better than no breath at all" note

Behold my McFarland CA large size.

Wretched, horrific, abomination, whatever you fancy.

3 large known, 0 appearances in 20+ years. Only $390 outstanding. Very rare. Like Delano in Kern County, McFarland had a small population of less than 700 when this was issued in 1913.

The note was found with a small group of CA rarities (Tranquility, Parlier, etc) inside of a rat infested wall in Northern CA, 1970's.

This was a purchase from Fred Bart in 2013, it became a part-time art project that was finally sent to fledgling grading company CGA, and reacquired by myself years later.

Uncollectible to most, it's still a large size from Mcfarland.

And with this note, I wish you a Happy (early) Halloween.

This note sold back in 2005 for way below auction estimates and expectations. If it were mine, I’d send it to Nancy for restoration. Here’s a photo of the note then, along with the auction description.

I actually contacted her a month ago. Still working out a plan. Such a nice lady- and she does excellent work.

I tend to disagree with the "circulation" aspect. Many fibers are still visible on both the obv/reverse, and all that occured with this one was light staining & tons of rat chew. 🐀 chew around all the edges, margins, internally, and complete right end. If I had to place a bet, I'm willing to wager this was put away in a wall in the 1920's as a Fine, and the environment took effect. I like to think it paid someone's rent.. or bought a ton of groceries.. We'll never know- but I do love this note.

Most collectors, dealers and auction houses consider Nancy Poli and her daughter as having the most comprehensive paper money restoration services available today. I used her on an old, large-size Tampa National and was thrilled with the results. It wasn’t inexpensive or fast, but I wasn’t expecting it to be.

I may just leave it as is. The repairs needed are far too extensive. Add that to the tape on the back. ...

Sure, Everytime you look at it you're reminded why it wouldn't bring $7,187 like the only other version which sold 15+ years ago.

    But..

I will mention it is going out to FLA to be graded by PMG. I'm more in preserving in plastic, than any numerical grade for this thing.

They can grade it a Poor 1 NET, it wouldn't make any difference to me. It is what it is.

    Only 3 large known!
