Any thoughts or wild guesses on what may have caused this 83 years ago?

Could be a struck thru, but looks more like a lamination to me.

It is a lamination, and a nice one too.
So you think the laminated fragment fell off or detached?

Yes, they happen when there are impurities in the alloy.

Here's one I have on a 57D Franklin.

Chances of having the fragment are very little. If it came off at the mint it would fall thru the riddler. I suppose someone could have a figment that delaminated while in their possession. Missing clad layer coins are the same principle except the whole layer split off either before or after strike.

I've seen some really nice detached fragments posted here with the original coin.
Here's one I have that I'm not going to mess with. It looks like it would split apart if I pried it open.

I guess I should change the title of this thread.

That's a crazy looking deatached lamination (after strike).

I have this retained lamination that's pretty cool also. This pic is from the Coin World article it was in.

nice laminations
@MWallace - If I submitted it, how would you want to see it worded on the label?

"REVERSE LAMINATION"
Plus, I'll request the reverse of the coin placed on the front of the holder.
