Error or damage?

I found this today in a collection that I inherited. I am wondering if this is some kind of misstruck coin or is it damaged. I have never seen anything like it.

Most assuredly damaged after it left the Mint.

So we can see if it’s damaged, too?😉

Sure, why not. It will help train newbie's to always post both sides of a coin.

Strange! That type of damage on the obv and nothing on the rev.

You can see the damage on the reverse as well.

Very little. I would have expected to see much more compared to the obv.

Not if more than one coin or another object was involved. Looks like vise jaw texture, someone probably used the coin to protect a part.

It looks like it was pressed against some kind of diamond plate sheet.

Diamond pattern vice Jaws for better gription.

The damage shows considerable wear. Perhaps done by a bored sailor onboard a ship during WWII.

    All glory is fleeting.
  • It's damage. Probably it was put into a vise or something similar.
