2001 north Carolina quarter annealed??

Why is my quarter greyish blackish and goldfish?? With smooth edges??

    Toning can change a coin to many colours.
    Could you show a photo of the edge. It is possible that it is an early
    stage dryer coin or it has been spooned.

    I don’t see any goldfish on it 😜 but it looks like you have just a damaged quarter. I’m no expert on modern coins, but just looks like it has altered surfaces from some process, a washing machine/dryer, or something like that. I don’t see any error there.

    Very well-worn. Possibly too long on the slot machine circuit.

    Collector and dealer in obsolete currency. Always buying all obsolete bank notes and scrip.
