Initial listing; seller took a boatload of images:
Obverse:
Reverse:
Seller's comment: "It's not fake the coin shop verified it & offered me 175 bucks for it!".
Relisted now at a lower price: https://www.ebay.com/itm/364465264863

The whole date is weird, not to mention the overall look.
Genuine
Then there's that shelf rim issue as well.
Reported - for all the good that will do
I don't know this coin but the denticles look off and the date looks funny. Without knowing this series more, I couldn't pick out anything else.

Oh and reported. A couple more reports and it might get taken down...

Please don't report it just because I stated it is counterfeit or it "looks funny"!
Why not, we agree with your assessment.
bob
vegas baby!
It's not that it looks "funny" as much as it just looks wrong compared to a real 1823
"When they can't find anything wrong with you, they create it!"
Thank you! I always start with attribution and am pretty visual in my research...
Maybe the seller should take that offer from the coin shop.
My Collection of Old Holders
Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
Just to add to the conversation, I would hope that the collectable contemporary counterfeits are not reported to eBay, but this one seems to be a more modern counterfeit. Collectable contemporary counterfeits are actually very collectable and have a strong value, though more modern pieces are not valuable to that group. This one is not that convincing to my eyes!
Star 1 too far from bust for an 1823.
And the round ear bottom and taller middle hair bunch looks more like the Head of 1836.
Dentils are off and the wear on the reverse doesn’t match the wear on the obverse. High XF vs VF.
To me, the date is “ballpark” to a genuine, w/o the help of blowup side by side comparisons.
I have seen this one before look at the hair curls above the 3.
@burfle23 images made that one crystal clear putting them side by side... All the errors were immediately noticeable.

Nice wire rim 1823. They really made sure the collar dies were loose for that one.
"It's like God, Family, Country, except Sticker, Plastic, Coin."
Continuing the "attribution"...
Very modern; I wouldn't have reported it if a contemporary...
I would be skeptical of any raw high grade 1823 N2. It is a pretty scarce critter, with CoinFacts showing about two dozen certified in all grades above VF.
The coronet does not look like the Head of ‘36;
More like 1833 N-5 to my eyes.
@burfle23 you are doing such an amazing effort for the hobby with all you do. Anyone here who reads his posts should look up all the discussions he has created on this forum. People like Jack keep many of us safe in our hobby. Personally, you do not get enough credit for all you have done! I for one, appreciate everything you do!
My previous Coin Week article on this "family" of counterfeits: https://coinweek.com/the-expanded-family-of-counterfeit-large-cents-based-on-the-1833-n-5-variety/
And now another seller, same coin issues...
These last few have some good examples of a classic marker for this type of counterfeit -
the date is much sharper than the rest of the coin.
I hit Like for the post, but I very much dislike that these fairly well made copies are spreading. Yes both sellers are in Virginia, but I’m guessing there are more around.
A couple of matching marks between the two:
