Cool circulation find

Looks like this is a retained de-laminated strike. Almost looks as though after being struck it separated, but remained intact. Another at the 10/11 o’clock area delaminated and was lost. Also on the obverse a depression on the rim opposite the delaminated area with die chip. Oh yeah- sorry for the not so great photos. What do you think of this find?

    Nice find like that

Thanks Fred. I thought it was pretty cool that the lamination was still attached.

Nice find, I like the location of the delamination., it's almost as if the flame from the torch caused it.

Nice - don't see that on clad coins very often.

Nice score. Notice the weakness area on the obverse rim area at 8 o clock. Corresponding with the reverse area in question. Clean coin overall, helps to show the error more clearly.

This is the point that confuses me a but.

The mess on the flame is a lamination, but what is the anomaly at 10:00 on the reverse?

If it was a detached lamination I would not expect there to be a corresponding weak area on the side. Since there is a weak area, could it be that the metal was missing before the coin was struck?

Not really sure myself how this occurred. Perhaps Fred could offer some insight @FredWeinberg. If there was a planchet defect on the reverse with missing metal, maybe there wasn’t enough to fill the die resulting in a void?

    That's my guess. :)

Which sort of makes it a double error. ;)

Could also be a struck thru on that spot.

But if there was debris there I would expect no weak spot on the opposite side...(?)

I am guessing there was a lamination that detached before striking.
