GTG - 1892-S PCGS Morgan -- REVEALED
![ProofCollection](https://us.v-cdn.net/6027503/uploads/userpics/QIP6JI4CU911/n5SBQTUQGMRJE.jpg)
Bought this in 2011 and was checking it out today. I'm considering submitting this 1892-S for a re-grade. Am curious to hear the grade opinions in the forum before doing so.
Also, this is currently a in a PCGS slab, but is it almost a details coin or does it look OK? I'm seeing the light scratches on half of each side of the coin.
Edited to add: I believe this is VAM-2. Not sure it's worth attributing but it is a Top 100 VAM if it is.

Currently a 53?
The coin looks to have approximately AU53 details, with some hairlines and scratches, as well as a wipe at the central portion of the left side of the reverse. My guess is that it was downgraded to AU50, due to those flaws.

Looks au details to me

✓ Everyman Mint State Lincoln Cents (1909 – 1958)
✓ Morgan Dollar GSA Hoard (1878 – 1891)
I think it should have graded as cleaned (from these photos) if it is straight graded I would leave it alone.

It is straight graded. The only risk is the regrade fee of $40. If PCGS were to deem it Details, they would cut a check and I could go find a replacement. So the question is, if not details, what do you think it should be graded?
There are significant price jumps between each grade where this coin resides.

AU details.
I would say AU50
My first instinct was AU50.

Hard to believe they missed the cleaning on that puppy. Leave it as is.

vegas baby!
I thinks it’s highly unlikely that they missed the cleaning. They probably just didn’t think it was severe enough to merit a details-grade.

It's a 45
It will not make a 50 IMO
Looks like in the AU range. I think you can say, keep in old holder if not AU-50 or better. Have never done upgrades for myself.
If it's currently graded a 40 or 45, this seems to be worth the $$ risk.
I'm on board with this. PCGS did not miss it. Although I would never take a chance with a crack-out that they might change their opinion. At least I know not to waste money going for a CAC sticker. It's curious how the coin has a uniform look but the bulk of scratches is only on the left side (of the obv).
----REVEAL---
You nailed it! It's XF45.
When I was admiring the coin yesterday I was thinking AU50 which is what inspired me to make this post. Based on the responses here It has a decent shot at AU50 or at least XF45+. This one goes from guide price of $850 for XF45 to $2650 in AU50 and $3250 in AU53 so getting an upgrade is lucrative and worth the $40 risk.
I will send it in in a few weeks and update everyone.

Man, I am impressing myself lately with these GTG![B) B)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/sunglasses.png)
I would keep it as is. The chances of an upgrade is slim. They usually are tougher on giving upgrades when the price jumps so much for 1 grade.

Some photos expose a coin's shortcomings to the extreme, looks AU details, so the safe grade is XF45. Lot of surface still there but looks wiped or at least not handled very gently during circulation. Also not sure an upgrade is warranted and at XF prices will always find a willing market to purchase.
Good luck Proof Collection! We'll be waiting for the verdict![:) :)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Even as a kid this was an interesting issue to me. I didn't grasp why it was so expensive in BU and inexpensive in avg circulated grades. Now I know, there's just relatively few high grade coins.
Sorry I had gotten off the computer before I saw your post. Now knowing the grade I am wondering if this was a silent net grade. I would have guessed AU50 as a straight grade, although I still think that a cleaned/details AU grade would be the correct one.

I do agree that this photo does expose everything and I believe this TV photo is a "Secure Plus" photo before they perfected their image taking skills. The coin looks much better in person. Perhaps more the benefit of a regrade submission would be to get a new/better photo.

For sure pcgs net graded the coin. It has AU qualities, but couldn’t overcome someone trying to ruin the surfaces. This would be a coin for the sell pile, and go buy an unmolested example if you need the date.
I can’t grasp the concept of throwing more money at this, unless you’re attempting to have pcgs buy the coin under their guarantee? (Which isn’t the silliest idea if you don’t want your name associated with selling a problem coin)
