    65 FB.

I can't see the bands on the right side but they are likely there.

if not for the roughness on the cheek 66is a possibility.

It's a nice coin with a nice solid strike from dies that weren't too bad. It looks like a souvenir set coin but if so consider it a lucky guess since there were many types in the souvenir sets.

It's a Gem of a tough date and very few of them are Gems.

Shadow covers the entire length of said right side so possibly 😬 speaks to the depth of strike. And to my substandard photography skills.

    Yes to the souvenir set.

i might. I actually just started getting some slabbed clad Roosies. I have 8 on the way and about 9 more being held while I round up the dough.

They're not my thing (although I'm not so sure) but I'll hold it for you just in case. I learned some things on this order just not clear exactly what, kind of confusing. Down where I thought I would be up and up where I thought I would be down.

MS67FB - I thought this one would go 66 and threw it in the order on a whim. Glad I did.

Very surprised they gave that a 67 with all the marks on it. Lucky day for you.

@Coinscratch You need to look that MM over to see if it's the D/D. I know of several collectors desperately searching for that variety. It's hard to see.

    Paul.

Thanks for the heads up! I'll check it once it arrives. All I can do for now is enlarge the download and there is a shadow where you would see the northern D unless you can make it out.

Now pop 4/0. The value just dropped by 75% IMHO. based on PC price guide.

Based on the images, I would have guessed 65, maybe 66.
I'm happy for you getting a 67, but again, based on images, that's hard to see as a 67.

I agree to a point. When I sent it off FB was never a doubt and I had it graded at 66 best so yes, I too was surprised.
But, I think if you saw it in hand now, as I have you couldn't give it a 66. It's just too good for 66. Again, I go back to heavy strike and limited marks. Would you believe TVs are sometimes worse than always better?

Before seeing the reveal, I genuinely felt it was a 67 FB. I don’t understand any of the guesses below MS66 at all. Congratulations on the score!

Thanks, it feels good to have made a few scores on this particular sub. We're only as good as the material we find right.
Imaging takes out some guess work especially the finite details that end up being the determining factor. Too often I get caught up in eye appeal/toning but the camera keeps you honest...for the most part.

Here it is again in the best light I can produce.

I have owned hundreds of certified MS66 and 67 Roosies from NGC, PCGS and ANACS. I can say that none of the 67 coins had this many ticks on them. It could possibly 66FB on a good day, but I feel 67FB was a gift. I still own a complete set of Roosies 46 to 64 with a minimum grade of 67.

The coin looks extremely clean in that first photo but the roughness on the front of the cheek is highlighted by the lighting while appearing to be hidden instead. Many coins come out of the mint looking like it was slid around on a rough surface and this appeared to be one of them.

From the new pictures I'd grade it a solid MS-66 FB but assume it has extra luster to push it to MS-67.

From any picture it is a nice coin.

@gumby1234 Possibly a gift? I'm cool with that after all this only my 7th or 8th dime I've ever sent in, and maybe I was due for a gift :) Here's a gift for you, I was gonna ask for a full ounce of gold in trade but for you I will settle for a half ounce.
    How does it look now?

  • gumby1234gumby1234 Posts: 5,589 ✭✭✭✭✭

@Coinscratch sorry no gold here. Sold it all 30 years ago.

I have had a few Roosie sets in my days too. This coin should be graded MS66+FB. Too many obverse ticks to completely give a 7FB grade. But it is a key date Clad Roosie and I would be happy with that coin in that holder with that 7FB grade. It has more going for it other than a few minor ticks. The reverse is hammered with great bands for the D/MM. Torch is super clean. The chin, nose and above the eye on his forehead are all high points and all super clean. It has some wonderful mint luster for an early 80's clad dime. Only a couple flat spots on the LIB in Liberty and nicely centered on both sides.

It's a killer coin and worthy of the 7FB grade.

Thanks Stooge, I appreciate your insights as well. It was nice to think of it as a gift but better to realize and remember that they don’t just hand out lofty grades at PCGS.
I actually thought the two coins preceding this one would grade higher they came back 65fb & 66fb.
The Luster is pretty sick on the reverses but I will guess weaker strikes and deeper cuts? But as it were I knew I was in the black with the 82’ quarters and Kennedys so I was like what the heck.
About half of that order had no business being in the order lol but that’s part of the process.
