We don't own these cards, we just hold them for awhile

On our 1965 listserve, Jay of qualitycards.com said "We don't own these cards, we just hold them for awhile" in reference to some trade conversations.

I thought the quote was brilliant, and just wanted to share Jay's thought with the group. I am very happy to have contributed cards to Wayne, Jay and several other 1965 sets.

To me the pleasure of collecting isn't simply the stacks of cards in my closet, but the thrill of the search, and the friends I make along the way, the trades and submissions.

Anyway, Jay's quote really resonated with me. Thanks Jay...

Brian - Glad you like the quote. I came up with that theory a few years ago while looking through a Mastro auction catalog. I am always impressed w/ the memorabilia from the turn of the century through World War I, and in this particular catalog, they had a multitude of display pieces, from tobacco advertising w/ Mathewson & Cobb, to team panoramas. All were fantastic, and all were out of my price range. I was sad that I couldn't land any, but thought that they obviously have changed hands since the 90 or so years that they were made. And no doubt that would happen again and again. I have a nice collection of cards & collectibles and I instructed my wife how to liquadate them properly in case of my passing. So in essence my collection which is seen by few, will one day be housed in other hobbyists collections as well....so "We dont own these cards (& collectibles), we just hold them for awhile"...jay

when i saw a picture of jay (his 72 topps ) i was very shocked to see that he didnt look like a hippie...he has a very mellow , down to earth personality.

a very sensible view of things and a very wise man.

he is also very flexible and extremetly easy to deal with when it comes to cards. ...for those who havent dealt w/ jay i strongly recomend him as a dealer... i am sure you will be very happy with the service and his competitive prices.

  • To expand on what calleocho said, there are a lot of very, very good dealers out there but I think Jay is absolutely the best! What separates Jay is how he really cares about his customers (many times at his own expense) and is just a genuine great person. Thanks Jay.

Wow! I'm starting to blush! Brian said I was Brilliant (at least my quote), Ethan said I am a wise man, and Wayne said I am the best dealer. I'll have to show my wife, she doesn't believe any of it.
Thanks gentleman for the nice thoughts they are appreciated. Oh and Ethan, about me not looking like a hippie, that shot was taken about 13 years ago when I had a store, had to keep up w/ image you know. I now have a beard and I say "groovy" & "man" quite often, so I'm trying image...jay
  • Jay is one of the finest people one can ever possibly wish to meet with, or deal with in this business.

Quality Cards is owned and run by a quality individual.

It is really unforfunate that there are not more people like him in the industry. Then again, if there were, we'd have no one to pick on or make fun of.

I have only done one deal with Jay, but it went extremely well. Very fair, and honest to deal with. Very much appreciated.

By the way Jay, anymore 1940 Play Ball's?

The JAY DAY, I like the sound of that. How 'bout everyone sends me cards (free of charge of course) for anything I need for my 17 registry sets....yeah! that'll work, thanks Wayne! image

Bernie - Sorry! about not offering much on the Play Balls, truth of the matter, lately I've been taking too much out of inventory to fill all my own sets.

Rob - Thanks for the nice thoughts, and remember the "Pen is mightier then the sword" ...jay
  • Happy Jay Day! Excellent quote. Jay, I was wondering if you would allow me the honor of using your quote as my signature? My attempts to quell thegemmintman's strangle hold on the '64 Topps Giants set have had little success.

  • Now this is a thread we can all be proud of. I have have delt with Jay on several occasions and I agree, he is one of the best card dealers. Jay was very helpful when I first started my 67 set.

    Thanks Jay!

Pinhigh - you should definitely delete your current signature line, and go for the "Jay Day" theme and famous quotes by Jay instead image.
  • qualitycardsqualitycards Posts: 2,811 ✭✭✭
PINHIGH - Feel free to use my quote anyway you see fit. But if you choose greeting cards, t-shirts, bumperstickers, keychains, posters and the like, I expect a healthy payment.

SKY - Good hearing from you once again. Don't be shy about jumping in on the boards. Helping you attain your goal w/ the '67 set was my pleasure.

GEMMINT - Sorry! I do not have too many more famous quotes in me - Most of what I say is incoherent gibberish...jay

Jay, you only needed the one quote to gain legendary status. The rest of us are in your shadow.

  • Jay - Thanks for permission to use the quote. I was thinking of a t-shirt design though. . . something like a T206 Wagner photo with the quote. The back could integrate an advertisement for Quality Cards in the card back. No bumper stickers though. . . well, maybe.

Gemmint - At least I tried. image

  • I was set up at a show one day and someone asked me if I collect. I looked at my show cases and realized that I had a good idea of what was in just about every stack. My 'mental inventory' was usually pretty good. I looked at my boxes of commons and thought of all the time spent restocking. (My wife always chides me on how slow I am at this. When she helps me, she doesn't read the backs!) I then thought about the sets that I was working on for myself and how much dust they were collecting and how I had sold cards that I needed to complete my sets. I turned to my customer, spread my arms and said "This is my collection. I buy cards, I enjoy them for a bit, and then pass them along to someone else to enjoy. Then I go buy more cards and the process starts all over again" I will admit that some cards I don't get to enjoy enough!
Now with the registry, I can see the sets that I have helped in some small way to build. Sure i make my living at this, but I still love da cards!
Of course I still have cards that are not for sale. I was able to keep my cards from when I was a kid. They are in VG shape and priceless to me. Besides my Ted Williams cards, I prize my Luke Easter cards. I have my battered 1954 Topps right where I can see it every day! I'd love to have a PSA 9 or 10 of that card, but it would never replace the one that I've had all these years
I'm rambling now, waxing nostalgic or whatever. All I really wanted to say was that I second what Jay (a great customer) had to say. We are ultimately caretakers of that which we treasure.
BTW I could sit on my hair and tuck my beard into my pants. ZZ Top had nothin' on me

CAMEO - I too! used to say the same thing when someone came in my small store and saw every inch packed w/ binders, wax boxes, set boxes, display pieces. I would say that everything is my collection! If I wanted to view an '84 Donruss set, I would go into the back room pull 1 out and enjoy it, then place it atop the other '84 Donruss sets. I had a display case made that covered the window where I would stand to do business. The case blocked out the sun (no fading allowed) re-inforced the window from break-ins and had aboout 60 cards on display in full screwdowns or PSA holders. So at any part of the day I could look at a '57 Berra, a '62 Mantle, a '58 Koufax and so on. So although they were "for sale" i got more enjoyment out of them then the buyer who might look at it, and place it in a safe deposit box.
I had my store for 13 years, and I enjoyed it through the good times and the bad (the '94 strike and cancellation of post season was the low point) - if anybody wants to see photos of my old store, advise and I'll dig some out....jay

  • I grew up in Buffalo and he played for the AAA Bisons for several years. (We won't discuss his being 'washed up' and then playing for the hated Redwings for years!) He used to hit trmendous shots out of old Offerman Stadium. I can still hear the crowd calling Luuuuuuke. I couldn't see Ted play, so Luke was a wonderful substitute! Back then AAA ball had a lot of former players from the Majors. The Bisons of 1957 had to be as good as the Bucs of today-better probably. Satch pitched for Havana! I have a program that lists him on the roster.
  • Cameo,
I don't know if you are aware, but Luke Easter's name is on the outfield wall at the Bison's current home stadium. Also, didn't he clear the scoreboard with a home run?My oldest brother used to tell me stories about how good he was.I made it to Offerman stadium once, but it wasn't for a ballgame.Take care,McAdoo
  • 1957: On the warm, hazy evening of June 14, off lefty Bob Kuzava of the Columbus Jets, Easter became the first batter ever to hit a ball over the center-field scoreboard at Offermann Stadium – a feat he was to duplicate later in the year.
He played 3 wonderful years for the Bisons. It's amazing the lasting impact he has had on the Buffalo sports scene. BTW, he was replaced in 1959 (to our shock and horror) by Francisco Herrera (1958 Topps error fame) who won the Triple Crown that year; the only one in Bison history.
