HOW ABOUT THE ONES THAT GOT AWAY, LOST STOLEN OR FORCED SALE

Every time I see Roberto Clemente cards it brings back such mixed emotions, mostly sad. I had every year Clemente mint or near mint condition except for the 55 & 56 and many many non basic cards such as stamps stickers coins & large cards . I also had several Mays and Aaron's and a few albums of other star and semi stars. Long story shot the album with the Clemente's that also had the Mays and Aaron's got stolen back in 1987-1988. After that I was so disgusted I started selling just about all my cards. It did help pay my rent and extras for awhile. I restarted collecting a little around the late 1990's Collecting mostly just Kobe's and some laker team sets. I also have since started some non sports and within maybe the last 5yrs I started collecting some Tom Brady cards.
Anyone else have a story about special cards that were lost, stolen or had to sell because you had pay bills. The ones that got away.

I’m embarrassed to tell this story. It was my first submission to PSA. I transposed the 2nd and 3rd digits of the zip code. It turns out that it was a legitimate zip code…to a military post office in South Korea. Once the USPS handed the package to the US military…the post office had done its job and could not get it back…and despite my best efforts I was at the mercy of the US military in South Korea and his or her honesty of returning the cards to its rightful owner…me. The review submission included the following cards, all PSA-8s:

    1. 1955 Hank Aaron
    2. 1960 Willie McCovey RC
    3. 1960 Carl Yaz RC
    4. 1962 Roger Maris
    5. 1963 Frank Robinson
    6. 1965 Pete Rose
    7. 1967 Tony Perez
    8. 1968 Nolan Ryan RC

I never served in the military…but it now feels like it! I have replaced all cards but the Maris and 6/7 are in a higher grade w/Yaz in the same grade.

Ouch. I think they should add a sad face emoji as an option.

A buddy of mine had a safe, that was not bolted down, stolen in the mid 1990's. Among the cards lost were:

1914 Cracker Jack Christy Mathewson - probably would have been a PSA 7 or PSA 8 even today. I recall being highly impressed by it then.
1914 Cracker Jack Ty Cobb - My guess is it would score a PSA 4 today based on pics he still has.
1933 Goudey Ruth 144 - probably a PSA 3 perhaps even 3.5 today based on pics he still has.
1933 Goudey Ruth 149 (red) - probably a PSA 3 today based on pics he still has.
1970 Nolan Ryan - Mint 9 but left-right centering was 90/10 - the easiest loss to swallow

It's now 28 years later and he has never got over the loss.

I did tell him many times to bolt the safe down...if only he had listened.

It's the singer not the song - Peter Townshend (1972)
