Ebay Seated Liberty Halves

There is a guy on Ebay selling several different lots of four of Seated Liberty Halves. All of the coins are in really bad shape. All of these bidding contests are all ending within the next thirty minutes or so. All but one of the lots are currently bid to between $25 to $50, except the attached link. Anyone know which coin in this lot is driving up the price so much?

  • OK, I ended up answering my own question. The auction ended at a price of $9,095.00. I looked up the 1878 S. Depending on condition, it is valued between 18k and 115K. Only 12k were produced. With the way this auction was presented and with the other lots he listed, I don't think he knew what he had with the 1878 S. He has to be surprised with the outcome of this auction!

Yeah the 1878-S is a rare expensive coin.

Wow, that's cool for a 78-s to be out in the wild like that. I hope it's genuine.

PCGS price guide is 30k in AG3. I think it would straight grade despite the bumps. If it's genuine, and if the seller completes the deal, someone is going to make bank on the coin. Even in FR2 it's 22k

  • I did a little research and found that it is generally thought that there are fewer than 60 of these coins that exist in any grade! I did just reach out to the auction holder on ebay to see if the auction took him by surprise! I will let you know what he says!

Dang! The reverse die marker dot in the upper left of the shield and the mintmark position look correct. I hope the buyer really found a new example.

    Holy cow!

Reaching out to him is probably a recipe to have the transaction canceled.

I'm guessing if he didn't know originally, he's already well aware of what he's put up for auction now. I'm wondering who on this forum will end up being the winning bidder.

I'd say welcome but you have actually been a member for some time. Next time you may consider bidding AND THEN posting about your great cherry pick on eBay.

  • Thanks for the Welcome Mark! Yeah, I am more of reader than a poster. I have been gleaning information from the board about three times as long as I've been a member. However, I thought what happened yesterday was worthy of my real first thread!

The small seller didn't do his research as usual. He called it an "1878" Seated half, not the super rare one. Even a Red Book would have helped him.

Wow. What a great surprise for the seller. That's a tough coin to find anywhere!

Everything the seller has previously sold were coins and some were slabbed. I suspect he/she may have known what they were doing. It doesn’t take a genius to look up a coin in a price guide.

For some reason, I doubt the winning bidder will ever receive the 1878-s half dollar shown. I expect to hear that their money was refunded with no coins shipped.

Yup. I've received one of those notices on a cherry pick before.

Why would you contact the seller, if you did not bid on it? That seems like a really di#k move.
Are you trying to screw someone out of a winning bid?

I asked the seller about it, got this response:

"Seems to be known to others too. People have messaged saying I'll offer $500 to I'll offer $13,500, and others saying its rare 1878 and worth $15,000 up to one saying $30,000. I am going to cancel the auction. The winning buyer says he cannot pay anyway". I responded recommending they try Great Collections to get the coin certified and properly auctioned.

Auction seems to have run the full five days. Doesn't look cancelled to me. Something still odd there. Five bid retractions on the same lot by three different bidders!

I suppose that the winning bidder would not want to pay if he also happened to be the seller.

  • logger7logger7 Posts: 8,641 ✭✭✭✭✭

Raw coins, even if super rare, almost never bring real market on ebay. If the 1878-s Seated is worth $20K or so, the seller is never going to get close to that uncertified in an auction that ends on a weekday morning.

This coin needs to be submitted for grading by PCGS!

An authorized PCGS dealer, and a contributor to the Red Book.

    Too bad not chopmarked.
For a second there I thought maybe..

Forget the weekday morning. The listing didn't identify the date
