eBay Authentication for PSA Graded Cards?

I have 8 PSA graded cards I am trying to sell as a package for a total of $250 on eBay. They were all recently graded by PSA. Does eBay require that they be sent in for authentication before they are sent to the Buyer? This whole thing seems rather foolish considering PSA authenticated the cards.

Comments

  • I believe the authentication is only for individual cards that sell for $250 or more.

  • Yes, from my experience. I’ve only done one sale this year, but it had to pass through the third party, which seemed to tick off the buyer because he complained it took so long to get to him.

As mentioned, doesn't apply when more than one card is in the listing.... It's not just authenticating the graded cards, it is also preventing the seller from shipping something else, or the buyer saying they received something else. Obviously more important for higher end stuff, but at least I know I'm not gonna have to deal with any BS on the cheaper stuff too.

Here is an eBay seller shipping PSA cards via EBay standard envelope. Item popped up on my saved search and saw the $1.10 shipping for the PSA card…. Feedback supports…

    What doesn't make sense: Two weeks ago I got a card from PSA (return address 1610 E St Andrew Pl #150...);
I put it on ebay; it sold for over $250 but now I have to send it back to the same address in Santa Ana, just attn
to a different person. So ebay is having PSA authenticate a card it just graded two weeks ago.

Seems like this adds expense for ebay (to justify a rate increase?) and delays the time to get to the buyer.
(Can anyone tell from the cert # how recently it was graded?)

Reason is; To prove slab wasn't tampered with and contents replaced.

  • I guess that it is a good thing that I developed a couple of excellent customers who wanted to buy off EBay for future stuff, so I won't have to send my 1963 Topps #537 Rose Rookie back to PSA as soon as I get it so I can ship it to the buyer that I already have. And I just looked, it went into assembly today from grading, may be on track for its scheduled 9.24 completion.

It makes sense for raw cards but not for those already graded by a company like PSA or Beckett.

    Not clear on your point?

eBay was bit by many re-slabbing scams or different item sent than what was auctioned or seller sending only 2 of the 3 cards in an order (like the large NJ based interest still does when below auth threshold) . Not to mention all the many buyer based scams that this eliminates.

Just as much need for slabbed as raw if you consider it from eBay's fiscal angle

  • Unless the collector making the purchase is incapable of looking at a graded card and determining authenticity to a reasonable degree, the EBay normal guarantee provides that protection already.

If you are an expert on EBay's back office financial moves, good for you. IMO the money would be better spent on live customer service over the layers upon layers of bad AI and overseas idiots.

So your approach will catch a few high value cards that would be obvious to any real collector, but not apply at all to a $249 sale per card for 50 cards. The scammers will simply adjust.

If you were to purchase a card to sell immediately perhaps that’s a good use of the vault.

I get that, but at the same time it's like ebay doesn't trust a seller who's got 25 years in with them; I'm not going to break open a PSA 1 slab and put a WORSE card in there after all these years of 100% feedback, kind of insulting.

For every 10 sellers like you there is 1-2 that is not. FWIW I had given up on purchasing most cards on eBay due to having been scammed by you know who in NJ until eBay's policy took hold. IMHO there are many like me and larger pool of buyers on a platform can only be good for the seller especially post bubble.

BTW: yeah I got my money back but I for one don't need hassles

Agreed, that way I'd instantly know whom to avoid.

  • Ebay authentication was implemented to protect eBay and sellers. It's very difficult to return anything after it has passed which prevents the old "Item not as described" empty box return scam.

  • FWIW I had given up on purchasing most cards on eBay due to having been scammed by you know who in NJ until eBay's policy took hold.

I don't know who in NJ. Who? I know about Mastro, and the 2 guys in Washington, and PWCC but what was the NJ controversy?

Prob... The ol' purchase 2 cards send 1 trick (or some variation thereof). I'm not the only one the feedback riddled with it still on lower priced cards that the eBay authenticity policy does not cover. eBay tolerates it from that seller, I guess their risk to loss analysis is enough in their favor to make it worth it.

  • So interesting to look for this thread to mention an eBay authentication incident and the last mention is of you know who in NJ and my issue was with you know who in NJ. I won an auction and was very excited to receive it. Felt I got a great deal on a nice card that is rare. Waited, then saw sorry your item failed authentication. Money refunded. No detail provided on how it failed. No way to respond and ask. Just an automated assistant. I had never had anything fail. Never imagined I would. Has anyone else seen this and know what kind of things cause this to happen? It was a Panini Prizm /149 autographed card where the manufacturer authenticates it. Then it was graded by Beckett.

I was thinking maybe shoved in a standard white envelope and destroyed but even then that is a super thick holder and should not have been damaged. Maybe they just stuck some random card in an envelope and the authenticator said nope, completely different card. That would be my guess.

^ Before eBay authenticity on cards that sold for >250 but ProbS thought unperformed they would just Ghost and or Gaslight you. Now it's simply the ol' switcheroo. Look for the card to be auctioned again possibly even before year's end.

IMHO best to consider ALL cards being offered by that NJ interest as if they do not exist. Simply swipe left and move on.

If you do see it again maybe report it to eBay.

There is a seller on eBay I found recently ‘kane04’. Selling trash. I don’t know why eBay allows sellers like that on their platform. I just keep buying cards and returning my them as ‘not as described’. It’s so satisfying.

Okay, so we have reached that point. The card that I bid on and won at a very appealing low gavel price from Probstein and mysteriously somehow failed authentication is now showing as listed by another eBay seller about 3 weeks after the failed authentication and refund. First Probstein. Now Jens Odd and Ends. Possibly a consignment that was disappointing and returned. I just sent a message to the seller asking if they can explain what is going on.

It was mentioned here that it could potentially be reported to eBay. But looking through the options it seems that, like a lot of companies, eBay does not want to be contacted. How have people gone about that here? Reaching out to eBay to discuss something. Reporting on an item. I feel like the only clear way to get in touch has been to request a return but if it gets refunded as this one did, that ends the communication.

Interestingly Probstein is selling the same card now same grade same grading company, different serial #. Not sure if there is an angle there but feels a little unusual. Its /149 and graded by BGS so should not be a ton of copies out there. Probably many of the owners of that card would not choose BGS and would not get a Gem Mint grade. So a lot of recent activity on a card that should be in short supply.

    Thanks.

I sold a couple PSA, BVG as well as GEM MInt 10 graded cards on eBay recently.
    The are authenticated.
Your payment is still usually available a couple (2-3) days after they are paid for by the buyer.
PSA and eBay work hand and hand these days.
Not sure how they are authenticated but they usually end up in the buyer's hand in about 3-5 days after the seller ships them
The ones I sold were in the $2k range and individual sales.
