is this damaged or an odd coin?

Not sure if this is an error or just damage. looks like the back is gouged maybe a die chip and the edge looks almost like the planchet was too small.

Damaged. Might have been ground down to use as a transit token.

    Gouge on the reverse.

Both damaged and odd, but not in a good way.

I found this coin in a Coinstar machine several years ago.

The coin was probably altered with a file to pass as a dime in a vending machine.
It weighs 2.67gm, is 19mm in diameter, and the sides are smooth.

A dime back then had far more value than it does today thanks to continuing inflation.

I have a couple of Lincolns that look similar. My dad, who grew up in the 50's-60's, told me they used to file them down to make them work in pay phones, juke boxes, and pinball machines back in the day.

You could also take a nickel and hammer it between leather to the diameter of a quarter.
