PCGS Unveils Grading of Classic Elongated Coins

That is the good news. Bad news is I have about 100 in NGC holders that will have to be crossed. May take a while.

But very glad to see this.

Do collectors of elongated coins really care that much about slabs?

At what point do elongated coins stop being "classics" and start being something that are tossed into the jar with Chuck-E-Cheese tokens?

    All glory is fleeting.

More good news - unless you’re under a legal or moral obligation, your elongated coins don’t “have to be crossed”.
    😉

It is much less work for me to have them crack them out.

No doubt, but I meant that you’re free to keep them in their present holders.

Meh. As a long time, advanced collector of elongateds this does nothing for me. Few examples are worth paying TPG fees to slab, and the purists prefer theirs raw. But if this floats your boat then more power to you.

I'm addicted to exonumia ... it is numismatic crack!

Oh, and BTW the YE author’s name is Dottie Dow (not Dory), who incidentally is arguably the hobby’s most prolific elongated collector/researcher/author. Yep, I’m going to send all my elongateds in right away. 🙄

I can’t see why anybody would want to slab an elongate in the first place, but that’s just me.

Elongated coins like the Columbian Expo examples were ruled on different machines and at different times. There are catalogued varities. They also come in different grades. Price can be affected and cerification is helpful.

We're not talking about contemporary Disney elongateds.

Soooo…. If a circulated coin is elongated, is the resulting elongate now “uncirculated” until that new design shows wear?

Or in other words does the condition of the “planchet” have a bearing on the grade of the rolled product.
