Incredible! I have not seen this example. Yours?

There are only about 5 known CWTs struck on 25c pieces. I would suspect this is due to two reasons:

    1. The size of the quarter only lends itself as a suitable planchet for a handful of varieties that are of the larger size of CWTs.
    2. 25c still held some value back. Laborers made about $1 a day for their services. Union soldiers (privates) a whopping $13 a month!

Interestingly enough, this same variety was also struck on another dated Seated Liberty Quarter. 1849:

The dies must have been in the hands of a collector, because other rarities were created. Here is one struck over an 1860 Abraham Lincoln Presidential Campaign medal:

Yes, my token. In from the wild... was in a collection of very nice civil war tokens and colonial coins. All raw coins with four graded a recently and others being graded now. Your examples are wonderful. Love the history. Seems the Diehl Undertaker token manufacturer struck a few over other coins (medals) maybe for collectors or friends.

In several ways. More than twenty thousand potential clients from New York State. One hundred or so died in the NY City anti-conscription riots, alone.

Probably a "made for collector" or "made for issuer" piece that was struck either when the CWTs were first issued or immediately after the civil war when collectors wanted pieces struck on non-standard planchets.

    All glory is fleeting.

Thats some collection if this is any representation. You probably know this, but it is worth stating that this is probably a 5 figure piece of exonumia. Easily worth $9-11k. I believe you are a part of our group of CWT collectors over at MyCollect, so please post over there, too. Incredible piece!

It's not showing up in the CWT group. I think you just posted it on your wall. Would you share it with the group? I think you will find more activity there.

    Congrats on the pickup
