Nothing Major - But a Nice Early Cent Surprise.

Interesting Coppers can still be found "In The Wild" - this time a 1796 Draped Bust Sheldon-105, a moderately rare 1796 Draped Bust at R-5-. Approximately 45-60 known.

The coin is in low grade and with an obvious assortment of surface nicks and scuffs, but I am excited nevertheless because the majority of S-105s are in low grades, and/or with environmental damage. This one is not.

In spite of the circulation damage, this example has nice surfaces and is not corroded or pitted. It might even just squeeze in at the bottom of the Condition Census for the variety.

As I said, nothing major but the kind of find which gets EAC collectors excited :) .

    Nice find.
The problem is that all ‘96 draped bust cents are scarce, I think the most common are R3s.

I cherried an S111 late die state, R5, same obverse as the NC (talk about getting sweaty palms while attributing a large cent!) at a greysheet type price. I think I eventually broke even on it via a trade for an N16 1817 a few years ago.

As you say, 1796 DBs are tough to find.

Up until about 5 years ago I was actively adding to my EAC collection, and focused for a few years on 96s managing to put together a reasonable selection, but was NEVER able to find an NC. I am sure you must have been pretty excited at the prospect of finding one. Still, an S-111 is quite an exciting find (still missing that one).

    Yep, so close!
I think these are the right photos, not sure if I checked the correct reverse from my photo library.
