What Carson City Year Set Would You Collect?

Manifest_DestinyManifest_Destiny Posts: 6,900 ✭✭✭✭✭

If Money were no object, I'd pick 1870. But money is an object, so it would have to be something more reasonable.

1871 - Still too expensive.
1872 - Nice set in the pre Trade Dollar era.
1873 - No arrows rarities make this set impossible.
1874 - No quarter, so no fun.
1875 - Cool set with all denominations minted including the 20c piece.
1876 - The 20c piece is another impossible rarity.
1877 - First year of the type 3 Double Eagle.
1878 - Another cool year with all denominations minted including the first Morgan.
1879-1893 - At best you get a Morgan and the three gold pieces, so not as interesting. 1893 is kind of neat since it the final year.

Of these 1875 or 1878 seem like the best choices to get a variety of different coins. Someone here had an 1875 silver set which was awesome. They even included both dimes.

1875 without a doubt but because my birth year is its centennial.

Sounds like you’ve already narrowed it down to the two, and of those two I would say 1875 without a doubt. Not sure what your budget looks like, but you’ll be able to get so much more coin for your money with the $20 than you would if you were to do 1878.

Yeah, the 78 set is twice as expensive overall compared to 75.

Repeat for the trade dollar. 75 is easily the option for breadth of coin and relative affordability.

Although in real life I have and like my 1878-CC coins best, I would have to say 1875-CC coins would be the top choice. I will never afford the the rarer 78 coins and 75 has the 20 cent piece plus the upper lower mintmarks. James

all the regular issues and yes that goes for the .20 piece. (some things take longer) :)

1875, for sure. It wouldn’t be a full CC set without the double dime.

Nothing is as expensive as free money.

A complete denomination set of Carson City Mint coins would be a neat project but I wouldn't limit myself to a single year.

The dollars are the only denomination minted every year of operation. Half dollars would probably be the easiest set to complete.

I have all the quarters (8) minus the 73 NA.

Since I already have all but the 20 center I would go with 1876.

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

I like 1891 for birth year related reasons and I'm already building a dedicated 1891 set. 1875 is definitely optimal for getting all the types of denominations.

I am one or two coins away from completing a 110 piece set. My favorite coin in the 1876 20c piece, and my second favorite is the 1870 cc 25c. I am likely to purchase the 109th coin tomorrow, leaving me with a fairly common coin remaining. Should complete the entire set, minus the 1873 NA 10c in the next few months.

I get the comment on the 1879 to 1893 being simpler due to the number of coins. If you want high grades, 1891 will give you lots of options, with a stretch on the $20. The 1879 $10 is a tough coin, but most of the 1880’s and 1890’s coin are available.

If you want breadth, 1873 contains just about everything but a Morgan dollar. That set has a sense accomplishment.

The 1870 set it tough on all but the dollar and half dollar. I like most of the coins in this year, as they are interesting.

However, instead of working on a one year set, build a type set:

    • two dimes (with and without arrows)
    • One twenty cent
    • Two quarters (with and without arrows)
    • Half dollar
    • Three dollars
    • One five dollar
    • One ten dollar
    • Two twenty dollars

Mix the years, but go for a consistent look and grade. I focused on P45CAC, and came fairly close, as my overall set grades in the low 40’s.

    Good luck!

That's an awesome accomplishment! I'd love to see your 1870-73 quarters if you can post pics.

So, looking at PCGS book for an 1875-cc set, it would be 38k in XF40, and you'd probably be paying book or then some for nice coins.

27k of that is the $5 (10k) and $10 (17k). The most expensive silver coin is the quarter at $2500, but all of them except the dimes are 1k or more.

Knowing the quarters, I suspect that finding nice coins would be the issue, regardless of price.

    Here's my VF25 quarter:

Not to be confused with the other Manifest_Destiny as I am the original Manifest Destiny...LOL

I started something similar years ago. I enjoyed the start but then sold it and have regretted it since. I keep debating if I should try again so I enjoyed reading through your thread. Here is a photo. None of it was CAC but for some reason liked the AU55 grade. If I were to do it again, I would try and do it in MS64 or higher and all CAC. But then there is a part of me that says do 55 again CAC because circulated coins have character and stories.

Funny coincidence! Nice coins, you should try again!

I'm a big fan of mint sets, although the idea of a mintmark-exclusive version is a good one. Of your two chosen years I'd probably favor 1878 just in case I wanted to expand to a full mint set (all mintmarks) since 1875 has a couple of stoppers

The 1878-s half is pretty much a stopper. 1878 is one of my favorite years overall though.
