I'm not a time the market or coin investment type collector. I'm just a hobbyist but from time to time this is always nice to see.
Disclaimer: I'm not a dealer, trader, grader, investor or professional numismatist. I'm just a hobbyist. (To protect me but mostly you! 🤣 )

As always, helps to compare it to other investments.
I agree, to the extent that one is doing this as an "investment."
I get a great deal of pleasure from my coins. Especially those that I dreamed about owning when I was a kid, and knew it was just a fantasy. And then I grew up, worked for a long time, and it wasn't a fantasy anymore. Like, e.g., the 1955 DDO Lincoln cent. I pinch myself regularly.
So I factor the pleasure that the hobby gives me into the decision to spend a lot of money on a coin (or coins). I certainly am careful about those purchases, but I don't consider buying a special coin to be like buying MSFT. I only really care that I can get a substantial portion of my (carefully researched) purchase price back were I to have to sell.
That said, I do enjoy when I see substantial increases in the book value of my more expensive coins (like my 1955 DDO).![:) :)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Agreed, any coins I own that have appreciated a little to a lot, I'm quite pleased, still like owning them but it's not such a grand gain as to be meaningful amounts one might retire on. Just fun to watch and beats feeling on the losing end of a transaction (which has certainly happened to me in the past as well.)
Still haven't gotten a 55 DDO but maybe in the future, who knows; most of them can look kinda "meh" so a perfect-circ surfaces one is to be appreciated. Am happy to own my humble circ 09-S VDB for many years now though!
That's a real nice 55.
