Remember when pocket change looked like this ?...

...you get home from work and empty your pockets onto the coffee table and it looked like this.

OR LIKE THIS ?........

Yeah right, me neither. Bet it was nice though!

I grew up in the clad era. Best I can do is remember getting bicentennial coins at the bank when they first came out.

I grew up with buffalo nickels, Mercury dimes, Standing Liberty quarters with Peace and Morgan dollars. When my dad would return from Reno or Tahoe he would bring home silver dollars for my piggy bank. Giant candy bars for a nickel and soda pop machines for a dime.
    I’m old as dirt.

The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

I'm almost 70 and was collecting when I was 10 (in '64), so silver was plentiful. In fact, I remember getting excited to find my first few clad coins amidst all that boring silver. All of my coins were taken from circulation, the best of which was a 16-S walker in what today would be G4. I also found a 14-S Lincoln. Darned if I can recall what I did with those. I know I did not spend them, so I must have sold them through Coin World classifieds.

edited to add that I also recall buying a 20-dollar Liberty from FJ Vollmer for about 60 dollars.

I was born in '95. Might have found a buff nickel or a silver quarter once or twice but that's about it :D

    Neat picture!

I wonder how often eagles and double eagles were carried as what we would think of as "pocket change"? They were always a fairly significant amount of money.

I remember the Mercs, Buffs, Wheat cents, silver Washington quarters and some Franklin halves on my paper route back in the 60's. That's about it. No Morgan, Peace dollars or double eagles! 😂

Plenty of Mercs, Buffs, Wheaties, Washies, Frankies, Kennedys, some WLHs and 1 Peace dollar in the 60's & early 70's. Might have gotten 1 IHC & SLQ but never a Morgan. Also had a paper route.

I'm curious what weapon is in the diagram upon which the coins are residing...

guess that would depend on the depth of your pockets.

I remember some of it. I was in Bermuda mid 70’s (USN) and was pulling that stuff out of change when it was long gone back home (few exceptions)

I hope you didn't harm perfectly good coins in the making of that pic!

I remember after collecting for the newspaper delivery having a pocket full of walkers and frankies, SLQs and washers, buffalos and mercs. I'd get home and my coin collecting Dad would cherry pick my collections. They all came back to me about forty years later when he gave me four shoes boxes full of coins he had cherry picked from me. Treasures.

Born in 1956 and started collecting in 1963.

I remember circulating coinage (obtained from stores, banks, my parents, etc.) that regularly included Wheaties, Jefferson nickels, Buffalo nickels, Roosevelt dimes, Mercury dimes, SLQ's, Washington quarters, WLH's, Franklin's, Morgan dollars and Peace dollars. I also remember on rare occasions seeing very low grade Indian head cents, Liberty nickels and barber dimes.

"Remember when pocket change looked like this" No, I'm old but not that old, I have never gotten a gold coin as change let alone as pocket change.

Agreed. Same dates for me as well. Same coins seen. A great time to start collecting, IMO.
