If you don't like the writing a little GOO-GONE should take it right off without hurting the slab.
Depending on what the rev. looks like. Sure

I'd have to see better photos, and be sure I could get the writing off. But, assuming better photos showed that the coin is reasonably graded, and I was sure I could get the writing off, and I wanted an XF40 copy of that issue, yes.
But note that the curve of the cost of this issue, graphed against the condition, is an odd one; I found better value at AU58 than at XF40.
If there was nothing distracting on the reverse, sure. But as 124Spider noted, it'd have to be a good price for the grade; the '13-S ty2 is one of those weird ones, where there isn't much appeal in paying hundreds for an F up to high VF, when for relatively little more, you can get a sharp AU. I remember this date being launched for promotion in one of Scott Travers' "buy these coins"-type books, years ago now.
Also, though I'm sure the writing can be removed, particularly with a round of Novus polish and some elbow grease, it could always be reholdered/put into the "nice coins to be reholdered someday" pile (I have a smattering of such pieces, one with a bad chip in the slab, one with an unappealingly scratched-off hologram/price sticker disaster, etc.) -- OR it'd be a heck of a nice album piece or for a Capital Plastics Buffalo board, if one wanted to go really old school.![ ](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Yes I would. The sharpie will easily come off with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol. When I am at a show I have written on slabs with a sharpie when I can't find my stickers, then take off the writing later.
Kind of a dip$h!& thing to do imo.

I guess if you purchased it and didn't like it you could return the coin with "No, thanks!" written in Sharpie on the slab!

HERE IS THE REVERSE, IT IS A TYPE 2

From what I can see, it looks like a nice coin. If rubbing alcohol or GooGone doesn't work, a little plastic polish would take it right off. Also, you can use the writing on the slab to negotiate a lower price.![;) ;)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)

Personally I'd crack it and put it in a holder with the rest of my set if I ddn't already have one.
No - Never seen anything that stupid - ruining slab w marker writing! But if you got it discounting reholder expense your call. Try Gogone first.
If offered to me at my at table show would pass and advise them get it reholdered whatever. It’s their responsibility take care of their slabs. Hopefully Googone would do job instead.
Perhaps somebody might buy it as it is but offer would be deeply discounted. Reholder expense, etc.
I was about to buy a CAC 66 commem about 3 mo ago. About 10 pct above CAC bid. Really lustrous PQ coin. Already somewhat border line in being a deal for me. But it had a noticeable tick on slab near the coin - I passed. If your going to buy that material put it in a slab box where not in contact w other slabs!
If I was looking for one I wouldn't let that talk me out of it. Marker is easy to remove, it also isn't obstructing the coin anyway. It's not like they scratched the info in with a key. Couple seconds with alcohol it will be off there.
Collector, occasional seller
I don't know why anyone's getting hung up on the marker. Gone in 30 seconds with plastic polish.
The coin is what's important... and it appears accurately graded from what I can see.
If you can come to terms on price, why not?

That coin appears lifeless to me.
Pass.
Disagree with streeter -- on the contrary, that coin (unlike MANY Buffalo nickels) isn't an artificially too-bright and unappealing scrubbed against other nickels circ. It's dirty, dusty and crusty as one could only hope for a circ nickel to be. Different strokes for different folks, but I'll take a coin like this 10 times out of 10 vs. one with an artificially "bright" life to it.![ ](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
