I've researched this penny and could not find anything about an error on the date. This penny you can see shadowing to the right of the 8 and 7 and the D. I also took a photo of next to a regular looking penny. Is this common?

That is known as split plate doubling, a very common defect of the minting process with the zinc cents. In a nutshell the copper plating is stretched and will look like this or have a silver outline from the zinc core being exposed. this is not an error and adds no value to the coin.

From your posts it seems that you may have watched a few you tube videos and are looking for the widely hyped (but seldom found) coins that many of those videos tell people to look for. I would suggest that you spend the time to research a site with true numismatic information about errors, error-ref.com. https://error-ref.com/ You can type in split plate in the search box and read all about this type of error, as well as many other legitimate errors and the many falsely hyped ones.

Thank you coinbuf. Yeah, I'm definitely a new to this. I was just sorting through my pennies looking for the 1982s 😄 and wheat backs. I just noticed the 1987 looked odd and tried to look some stuff up on it. Thank you for the link definitely gonna check it out!
That's die deterioration doubling. Do you see the coin surface, how grainy it is? That was imparted from the die, the die was a tad spent.
