What does the term "full bloom mean?

Morgan13Morgan13 Posts: 1,352 ✭✭✭✭✭

This is something I have seen in some sellers descriptions.
I am guessing it means a really nice strike. I'd like to know for sure though.
If you have a Morgan or any coin that is "full bloom" please post it.

    It means full luster.

Would that apply to both Business strikes and proofs?

    Usually business strikes only.

I usually hear it as "full mint bloom"

I interpret it, and use it, to describe the "flower petal" like luster anomalies surrounding the Walking Liberty figure. Usually found on that series, but also, I think, on Barber halves and quarters, Saints, and others, I am sure. BTW, the pic is an MS 68 from Coinfacts.

I do not think of full strike when I see or hear the term "full mint bloom", what I expect to see is a coin with full original luster as if you just plucked off the die after it was struck. Morgan dollars have over the years been heavily subjected to the dip jar so it might be more difficult to find examples from that series to fit this description. And like so many descriptive phrases this is one that gets over/misused often imo.

Much like the walker half posted above when I see what forms the half moon luster bands in the fields of a Lincoln cent on each side of the bust, that is what I consider full mint bloom for that series.
