What a Fun Diversion!

I’ve been working on my Type Set and trying not to be ‘distracted’ but one of my recent posts was about how I’ve decided to start collecting Buffalo nickels and Jefferson nickels. I haven’t added many new coins yet (being picky and still better defining specific collecting goals for nickels) but I must say it’s been super fun going over coin after coin in very avoidable price ranges (1/50th or less the cost of some of the holes I have in my Type set).
I particularly liked this recent addition! I’m still primarily focused on the type set with goal completion in ~5 years given budget (really is any set ever ‘complete’?) but I’m super excited to also slowly add to my nickel collection with no expected completion date yet.

That’s a great looking Jefferson.
It’s a fun series to dabble in. I’ve been casually collecting them for about 10 years. Only have about a dozen graded and maybe 30 raw. Like you, I am very picky and I’m also frugal so it’s great that you can find some real gems for $20 or less.
My best score was a 42-S I bought raw on eBay for $20 and sent to NGC where it graded 66PL. No toning, spotting or haze. It’s a stunning coin.
Gratz on the raw find! I don’t yet trust myself enough for any of my purchases to be raw. Jefferson’s I feel like I can get within +-1 grade but series like Buffalos I still have no hope.
For now I’m focused on 1938-1964 Jefferson’s to make the set a little more approachable.
