1956 Hank Aaron Topps

SemperFISemperFI Posts: 802 ✭✭✭

I've owned this card since 1987. I bought it at a card shop. I am a coin guy these days and I know card grading is a bit different than coin grading in regards to cost. Is this card worth getting graded or sell as is. Would this be equal to a PSA 4 or 5?

Edit: Yes that white line on the front is a light crease.
Edit: Best I can do with my old scanner. The odd color on the front is the scanner and not the card.

With the crease, I'd say 4 at best.

My guess would be probably a nice looking 3 which average about $250 on ebay. Selling raw at auction is more of a gamble, maybe get $125-175.

Is it worth grading? I'd say yes if you're not in any hurry.

    PSA 3.5. Nice card.

That is a hefty crease it has. Possible others that don't show up in scan. Also I see a lot of purple splotches (could be your scanner as you mentioned) on it that is not normal for that card. My guess is a 2 at best.

That’s the only crease and the crease doesn’t show on the other side.
The purple splotches is the scanner and not on the card.

Thanks all for the input. I have several cards from when I was a kid that would probably go get graded at the economy level (two months wait).

I will post some grades when they return.

Any crease will lower the grade to a 4(?).
    Nice card, good eye appeal.

Good luck with the grading. Look forward to seeing the results.

I cannot see that getting a 4, don't be surprised if it got a 2 if sent in.

I'd say it gets a 3 at best

I suspect it is (even) harder to grade cards from a scan than coins.

Easily a PSA 4, or should be. 3.5 at the lowest IMO. Solid card -- good luck! It'll look nice in the holder.

Regardless of technical grade, nice card.

I doubt anyone saying this is an easy 4 is also DM’ing an offer to buy.

    Hope for a 3, do a dance if you get a 3.5.

I picked up one that's a 3 from a guy needing some cash not too long ago and love the card. They look great in the slab so enjoy!

My 6 is better though! B)

    Would be a 3 or 4 five years ago. Now a 2.

Not buying that it's a 2, not at all, BUT with the crease/wrinkle through the Sig and Umpire I'd agree with a VG. I do hope the OP shares the grade when/if they get it!

Put me down for a 3. Crease + corners + Hank Aaron.

  • KendallCatKendallCat Posts: 2,999 ✭✭✭✭✭

IMO it will be a 2/2.5. Have a 56 Mantle in a 4 due to a crease and picture is below of it for comparison purposes.

My grade 56 Hank Arron is finally back. That took a while. PSA Good 2. Not as good as I thought/hoped for but still a great card.

based on the nice centering and having a crease, I would say it looks more like a 3 to me. the next stage down is 1. a one can be a crumbled up card with dozens of creases and banged in corners. this one looks much better than just a step up from a 1. in fact i'm sure there are 3.5's on ebay that look like this.

i have a 1.5 1968 mays on ebay for sale right now that is creased from side to side and up and down. multiple long creases. no way it's only a half grade worse than your AAron. the aaron looks much better.

SMR collectibles currently has a 1956 topps aaron psa 4 listed for $275 on ebay. your card looks much better than that one. so the two is kind of a slap in the face.

I agree. I'd expect a 2 to have noticeable crease(s), and this one doesn't have that.

  • RufussCkingstonRufussCkingston Posts: 1,641 ✭✭✭✭✭

Maybe crack it and send to SGC... I have a buddy with a OPC gretzky that was creased every which way and it got a 1.5 for eye appeal! They must of really dung you for the corner wear and edge wear.

Very nice card! Looks better than the grade.

  • nam812nam812 Posts: 10,580 ✭✭✭✭✭

Should have been an easy PSA 3. If you ever decide to sell it, I'm sure you will get a price closer to a 3 than a 2. Nice card.
