I wish the photo was better, but perhaps it'll give you an idea.

Not my area of focus, but I will 'take a shot'.

Appears to be a 'braided hair - half cent' (1840 - 1857). Reference

Based on the shape of the ribbon under the "E" in "CENT" (Cohen, Reverse C), I am guessing 1849, or later.

This is 100% a braided hair half cent from 49-57 (I do not believe it to be an impaired proof). I am trying but can't quite guess the date yet.

The easiest "tell" that this is a braided hair is that the word "cent" is not underlined (as it is on the classic head)

I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.

    Ok, you guys got me.

I was 100% convinced this was a Braided Hair half cent until I flipped it over and saw this:

The weight is everything you would expect of a half cent.

That certainly explains Some of the "weirdness" in word America that I attributed to damage. Interesting that all the markers line-up on the reverse. Now that I have seen the obverse, well... I am even more confused. The only thing I know about the coin is that I was wrong. :D
