Are postage stamps machine readable?

Reason I ask is that when I was a kid and collected stamps, I mailed some envelopes to myself with foreign stamps and they were delivered with no problem.
Sooo... have they made stamps readable when sent?

I'm pretty sure the answer is "sort of".
They aren't readable for denomination, but they do have a phosphor tag (either strip or whole stamp) that allows the machine to orient the envelope so that the address/zip can be read.
